Hussain slams Australian 'double standards' over ball scandal

Ex-England skipper Nasser Hussain says the premeditated nature of Australia's ball-tampering sets it apart from previous cases of cheating in cricket and is adamant that captain Steve Smith must shoulder lots of the blame. Smith, 28, was banned for one Test by the International Cricket Council after admitting he and a group of his players planned ball tampering during the third Test against South Africa. He is expected to face a harsh sanction from Cricket Australia for his role in the plot, which saw team-mate Cameron Bancroft tamper with the ball by using yellow sticky tape, before desperately trying to conceal the evidence down the front of his trousers. "Ball-tampering has always been part of the game, so we should be careful not to get too holier-than-thou," Hussain wrote in a column for Britain's Daily Mail newspaper. "But what makes the Australians' behaviour in Cape Town different from other instances, I believe, is the premeditated nature of the crime. "Steve Smith and his ...

Australian cricket investigation into cheating plot underway

Australian cricket's investigation into the cheating plot that plunged its team into crisis and threatens the future of its captain and best player began today after two senior officials arrived in South Africa to start work uncovering the extent of the rot. Cricket Australia's head of integrity Iain Roy and high-performance manager Pat Howard are in Cape Town to lead the investigation. After arriving, Roy "will immediately conduct his inquiries around the specifics of the ball tampering incident," the Australian cricket body said. The initial part of the investigation will likely be done at the Australian team's luxury Cape Town waterfront hotel, where they are holed up ahead of travelling to Johannesburg for the final Test of the series. Captain Steve Smith, who has temporarily stepped down, confessed to being part of a player "leadership group" that came up with a plan to cheat by tampering with the ball during play on Saturday in the third test against South Africa in Cape ...

Smith's behaviour had fallen well below standard required: MCC

The Marylebone Cricket Club today said Steve Smith's behaviour had "fallen well below the standard required" and called for a major shift in attitude and culture to preserve the game as the pre-meditated ball-tampering conspiracy, involving the under-fire Australian, escalated. Smith has been banned for one Test by the International Cricket Council for his role in a plot that saw team-mate Cameron Bancroft tamper with the ball by using yellow sticky tape during the third Test against South Africa. The sole authority on the laws of cricket since it was founded in 1787, the Lord's-based MCC reacted to the barrage of criticism for Smith and his beleaguered team. "Changing the condition of the ball is prohibited under Law 41 concerning Unfair Play. Law 41 also places upon the captains of both sides the responsibility for ensuring that play is carried out in accordance with the spirit of the game as well as within the laws," said MCC assistant secretary John Stephenson. "The behaviour of .
