Mihelic penalty gives Chennaiyin FC win over Mumbai City FC

A 67th minute penalty strike by Rene Mihelic ensured Chennaiyin FC beat Mumbai City FC 1-0 here today, to end their league phase engagements of the Indian Super League on a winning note. The result meant that Chennaiyin finished second in the points table, behind Bengaluru FC, with 32 points. A new-look Chennaiyin team, with the coach ringing in the changes, kept a determined Mumbai City team at bay, with some good defending. A Balwant Singh goal for Mumbai in the dying seconds was disallowed, as he was off-side. The second half saw both teams step up the attack though Chennaiyin FC looked sharper and likely to break through. The two sides made substitutions and then came the big moment. Mehrajuddin Wadoo brought down Chennaiyin skipper Jaime Gavilan with a rash challenge and the referee pointed to the spot instantly. Slovenian Rene Mihelic slotted the ball past a diving Arindam Bhattacharja to give the all-important lead, sending the home fans into raptures. The first half was an ...

Australia take lead past 400 despite South African fightback

South Africa fought back on the third day of the first Test but could not stop Australia from taking their lead beyond 400 at Kingsmead today. Australia were 213 for nine when bad light stopped play, an overall lead of 402. South Africa will be faced with a daunting task when they eventually get to bat on Sunday on a slow pitch on which batsmen have struggled to play with freedom. But the hosts could take heart from a fighting, disciplined performance after Australia made a sparkling start to their second innings. Cameron Bancroft (53) and David Warner (28) put on 56 in 13 overs for the first wicket and Australia seemed to be racing to an unassailable position. The run rate remained brisk as Australia reached 112 for three at lunch. The scoring dried up after lunch, however, and Australia lost six more wickets while eking out another 101 runs in 44.4 overs before the umpires took the players off the field. Kagiso Rabada bowled with pace and hostility and was unlucky not to claim more .

Neymar's foot operation a success: officials

Surgery on the broken right foot of Brazil and Paris Saint-Germain superstar Neymar went successfully today, officials said, leaving the planet's most expensive footballer in a race to recuperate before the World Cup. The operation, performed by Brazilian national team surgeon Rodrigo Lasmar, began early on Saturday morning in the Mater Dei hospital in Belo Horizonte. Just after midday (1500 GMT), a spokesman from the Brazilian football federation announced that the operation was over. "Neymar is already in his room. It went well," he said. Neymar broke his fifth metatarsal -- the bone leading to his small toe -- during a 3-0 drubbing of Marseille on February 25. The striker -- whose transfer from Barcelona cost PSG a record 222 million euros ($264 million) last August -- has scored 28 goals in 30 appearances in all competitions for the club. Neymar will miss PSG's make-or-break game against Real Madrid next Tuesday. But with Lasmar predicting a recovery period of two and a half to ..

Credibility of shortlisted names for DDCA coaches' course under scanner

The Delhi & Districts Cricket Association (DDCA)'s shortlist of aspiring Level A coaches has raised quite a few eyebrows with a few without any experience of playing senior level representative cricket being given preference over players, who have had more than 100 first-class wickets. The DDCA had invited applications from former players interested in coaching for their Level A programme, which will cost Rs 10,000 (ten thousand) per player. Accordingly, on March 1, the DDCA shortlisted 35 names (men and women included) for the course. While the likes of Rishit Saini (1 first-class game), Oniel Wilson (2 first-class games), Karan Harit and Darshan Kajania (both in senior squad but never played a match) have been included in the list, someone like Chetenya Nanda (105 wickets in 31 first-class games) have been ignored. Even a player called Shashi Ranjan (2 first-class and five List A for Rajasthan) have been included while Nanda, who has played Challenger Trophy and also IPL (for ...
