No specific goals, just staying fit is target: Sameer

With his short international career affected by multiple injuries, Sameer Verma wants to focus on remaining fit as setting specific goals according to him is an exercise in futility. Sameer lifted his first title of the season at the Swiss Open Super 300 tournament yesterday, beating former world no 2 Jan O Jorgensen of Denmark in the finals at Basel, Switzerland. However, the Indian says he doesn't want to make plans for the season ahead. "I just want to stay fit, take care of my body, that is my target. I don't want to think about anything else. I know if I am 100 per cent, performance will come and my ranking will also improve," Sameer told PTI over phone. "I keep talking to my coaches and physios how to better take care of myself. I have realised that I was doing over training, which I have to avoid and think long term." Even last year, Sameer had started on a promising note, winning his maiden Syed Modi International Grand Prix Gold event in January and reached the quarterfinals .

Shooting not scrapped from 2022 CWG: CEO Grevemberg

Shooting has not been "scrapped" from the 2022 Commonwealth Games, the CGF said today, insisting that the sport continues to remain in the optional category. The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) CEO David Grevemberg refuted reports that shooting has been dropped from the Birmingham Games roster on the organisers' request. "In response to erroneous media reports, the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) would like to clarify that shooting has not been 'scrapped' from the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England," Grevemberg told PTI in an official response. "In no uncertain terms, the CGF wishes to clarify that shooting is, and always has been, an optional sport which a Commonwealth Games Host City has the choice to include on its Sports Programme should it so wish, and if it feels the sport is in line with its transformative ambitions for the Games," Grevemberg added. Even though shooting remains an "optional sport", Grevemberg termed reports of its scrapping as an ...

Comeback-man Vikas adjudged 'Best Boxer' at Strandja

It was double delight for Indian boxer Vikas Krishan at the Strandja Memorial Tournament here as he didn't just claim a gold medal but was also adjudged the best boxer of the event in the Bulgarian capital of Sofia -- a first for an Indian. The 26-year-old defeated world championships bronze-medallist Troy Isley of the USA in the middle-weight (75kg) finals to claim his first medal since the Asian Championships bronze last year in April-May. It was a massive turnaround for Vikas, who had not just been laid low by a hand injury but had also found himself in the disciplinary line of fire after giving a walkover in his Asian Championships semifinal last year. "It is a big comeback for me and I feel I am a much stronger boxer now. Maintaining my weight at an optimum level, which used to be a problem earlier, is no longer an issue for me. I have also improved my technique and endurance," Vikas told PTI. "The hand injury was also bothering me for a quite a while but I have got a grip on ...

Bengaluru FC dealt a serious blow to Jamshedpur FC's hopes of securing a playoff spot in the Indian Super League (ISL) with a comfortable 2-0 away victory at the Kalinga Stadium, Bhubaneswar last evening. The loss for Jamshedpur FC means the fate of the debutants as well as FC Goa will now go all the way to the last game of the league to be played on March 4.However, even that may not be enough for Jamshedpur FC to cling on to the fourth place as Goa has one extra game in hand. For Steve Coppell's men, it didn't start off well for them.Miku gave visitors the lead 23 minutes into the game from the spot. After being put through on goal, the Spanish striker, who has been in top form this season was brought down inside the box by Jamshedpur FC goalkeeper Subrata Paul. He dusted himself and calmly slotted the ball past Paul.Stung by the goal, Jamshedpur FC who needed to win the game tried to be a bit more ambitions but they were pegged back again barely ten minutes later. I-League:Minerva confident to settle a score with Aizawl

Title contenders Minerva Punjab will be desperate to avoid third straight defeat when they lock horns with injury-plagued defending champions Aizawl FC in their I-League clash at the Tau Devi Lal Stadium in Panchkula on Monday.Minerva Punjab, who are sitting on the third spot in the league table with 29 points in 15 matches, can re-write the fairytale script in the same way as it was written by Aizawl FC last year who were considered to be the most unlikely option to triumph the silverware before the league embarked. The difference, however, between the clubs is that Aizawl FC managed to remain unbeaten at home throughout the season. However, Minerva Punjab have suffered two back to back defeats at home before welcoming the Highlanders, first to Kingfisher East Bengal on February 13 followed by another humbling to 'Giant Killers' Gokulam Kerala, causing a shock among fans and players alike.Defending champions Aizawl FC, on the other hand, started their season well but then went onto an .

PSG coach 'optimistic' injured Neymar will recover to face Real

Paris Saint-Germain coach Unai Emery remains optimistic that superstar Neymar will be fit to face Real Madrid in their do-or-die Champions League clash despite suffering an ankle injury in Sunday's 3-0 victory over Marseille. Neymar, the world's most expensive footballer, was stretchered off 10 minutes from time at the Parc des Princes as PSG opened up a 14-point lead in Ligue 1. The 26-year-old was on his own when he innocuously rolled his ankle and flopped to the ground in pain. "The first examination in the locker room revealed that it was a twist to the ankle. Now we will do a medical examination to find out what this twist is," said Emery, whose team face Real at home on March 6 in the Champions League last 16 where they need to overturn a 3-1 deficit. "We will wait for the examination, we will be optimistic. If I had to say today (whether or not he will face Real) I would rather say yes to being optimistic." PSG skipper Thiago Silva told Canal: "Neymar already had a swollen ...

Lukaku ends big game doubters as United beat Chelsea 2-1

Romelu Lukaku quietened questions over his ability to deliver against the best opposition by scoring and setting up the winner for Jesse Lingard as Manchester United came from behind to beat Chelsea 2-1 on Sunday. Lukaku hadn't netted in any of his six previous matches against top six Premier League opponents for United leading to suggestions the Belgian was a flat track bully. However, he has now scored 22 times in all competitions since completing a 75 million GBP move from Everton in July. "It's not bad, but you can always improve," said Lukaku of his return so far. "I want to do better for the team. At the end of the day, I'm at Manchester United and I want to win trophies. That's the most important thing." United manager Jose Mourinho was effusive of his praise for Lukaku, as his personal performance mirrored the hosts' overall display after a fast start by Chelsea. The visitors deservedly lead through Willian's strike just before the half hour mark as once again United failed to

Sky's the limit for Pep's Man City slickers

Pep Guardiola's League Cup triumph against Arsenal could usher in an era of dominance for Manchester City but he had three veterans to thank for a comprehensive win at Wembley. City were not at their best in a scrappy first half on a bitingly cold February day on Sunday, failing to hit the exalted heights of their football earlier this season. The highlight of the opening period was a bizarre opener for Sergio Aguero, who netted his 199th goal for the club direct from a punt down the field by City goalkeeper Claudio Bravo -- a rare route-one goal for a side renowned for their intricate football. But it was men against boys after the break as City totally dominated a disappointing Arsenal side, cantering to a 3-0 win with further goals from an ecstatic Vincent Kompany and David Silva. The League Cup may seem like small fry to a man with a glittering CV that includes two Champions League triumphs while in charge of Barcelona and a clutch of league titles with Bayern Munich. But an ...

Amit, Vikas strike gold; Mary Kom settles for silver

Vikas Krishan (75kg) and Amit Panghal (49kg) claimed gold medals but the celebrated M C Mary Kom (48kg) had to be content with a silver in the 69th Strandja Memorial boxing tournament for men and women, here today. India ended the tournament with a whopping 11 medals -- five from men and six from women boxers. In all, the contingent clinched two gold, three silver and six bronze medals. Amit, who fetched the top honours at last month's India Open, defeated Morocco's Said Mordaji to fetch the yellow metal. The 23-year-old Haryana-boxer recovered from a sloppy start to out-manoeuvre Mordaji, who was taller and matched the Indian in pace but eventually fell short on accuracy. Vikas, on the other hand, eased past American Troy Isley. It was a morale-boosting performance for Vikas, who had been laid low by a hand injury for a few months. What stood out was Vikas' vastly improved stamina and lucid foot movement. He was challenged quite aggressively in the final three minutes but kept his ...
