Wenger calls for cool heads as Arsenal face Spurs test

Arsene Wenger has warned his Arsenal stars to keep their cool when they face bitter rivals Tottenham as the heated north London derby returns to Wembley for the first time in 25 years. Languishing in sixth place in the Premier League, Wenger's side are however just four points behind fifth placed Tottenham. With their hopes of a top four place and qualification for the Champions Leahue hanging in the balance, the Gunners can ill-afford a damaging defeat at the hands of their hated neighbours on Saturday, while Tottenham are also a point adrift of the top four and desperate to avoid defeat. Given the high stakes amid the fight for local bragging rights, the crowd of over 80,000 are certain to make it a frenzied occasion. Wenger knows players can lose their composure if they get swept up by the derby atmosphere. And, with new boys Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Henrikh Mkhitaryan making their maiden north London derby appearances and Tottenham midfielder Dele Alli in the ...

Coach may have known about Nassar in 2011 - Raisman

Olympic gold medallist Aly Raisman said today that former USA team coach John Geddert may have been aware of sexual abuse by Larry Nassar five years before the doctor's arrest. Raisman, one of several US Olympians abused by Nassar who has been jailed, told CNN in an interview that team-mates had discussed their abuse openly in front of Geddert in 2011, who did not appear to respond. "We would talk about it amongst ourselves," Raisman said. "And one of my teammates described in graphic detail what Nassar had done to her the night before. And John Geddert was in the car with us and he just didn't say anything." Raisman said she was unaware what action if any Geddert took after the conversation. "I don't know what he did or didn't do from there," she said. "I know he didn't ask us any questions, but that is just why we need the full, independent investigation to get to the bottom of who knew about this." Geddert coached the US women's team to the gold medal at the 2012 ...

Russia says court rejected appeal from athletes under pressure

Russia said today the Court of Arbitration for Sport was under pressure from Olympic officials when it rejected a last-minute bid from 47 Russian athletes to take part in the Pyeongchang Winter Games. "It's difficult for CAS to make decisions against the backdrop of an earlier pressure," Russian Deputy Prime Minister Vitaly Mutko told Interfax news agency, referring to objections from the International Olympic Committee. He said that if the Russian athletes implicated in doping had been allowed to take part in the Games now "it would have caused shock." The deputy prime minister in charge of sports said the IOC had in place "opaque, controversial" procedures to decide who attends the Games and who does not. Mutko said this created an impression that the Olympic Games had turned into "a private party and there are a lot of attendance criteria." On Friday, 47 Russians implicated in doping lost a last- minute court bid to take part in the Pyeongchang Olympics, just hours ...

Indian women eye 3-0 whitewash of South Africa

Series in the bag, the Indian women's cricket team will be eager to pile further misery on South Africa in the third and final fixture of the rubber, which is part of the ICC Women's ODI Championship, here tomorrow. South Africa, who had beaten India in the World Cup last year, have not been able to compete with the sub-continental side in their own backyard. The hosts' batting has been a total failure, folding up for 125 and 124 while chasing in the first two ODIs. India have troubled South Africa with both pace and spin, whether it was Jhulan Goswami in the series-opener or leggie Poonam Yadav in the second ODI. The other bowlers too have chipped in with valuable contributions. Medium pacer Goswami, who became the first female cricketer to take 200 wickets in ODIs on Wednesday, would like to end the series on a high. Opener Smriti Mandhana has stood out in the batting department with scores of 84 and 135 at Kimberley. She would love to make it three in a row at Senwes .
