Russian officials have intimidated those pointing a finger at their doping affairs in biathlon, going as far as threatening their families, the Czech biathlon chief said Wednesday. "Some Russian officials threatened us, including my family, they wanted to silence us," said Jiri Hamza, who became the first vice-president of the International Biathlon Union (IBU) after the resignation of former IBU head Anders Besseberg. In April, French daily Le Monde quoted a report by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) saying Russia had "successfully" targeted Besseberg and Resch to buy their silence to cover up doping. India, who have qualified for the AFC Asian Cup commencing on January 5, 2019, are clubbed with hosts UAE, Thailand and Bahrain. But I generally follow football not only in Asia but also in South America. "When I saw the group in which they (India) are to play (in the AFC Asian Cup), it is possible for India to go to the next round," Matthaus said Wednesday at a media briefing here. The 57-year-old former soccer player is on a promotional visit to India. "The UAE is the favourite and they are home game for them. Gautam Gambhir's final appearance in competitive cricket will add an emotional overtone to an otherwise normal Ranji Trophy group league encounter between a depleted Delhi and Andhra starting here from Thursday. One of the biggest names to ever don the Delhi jersey, Gambhir will be retiring from his spiritual home, the Feroz Shah Kotla, amidst an outpouring of emotion on social media, where he enjoys a sizeable following. However, Delhi would have ideally liked the veteran left-hander to at least complete the season but having understood that a good IPL deal is a long shot, Gambhir did what any player who has played a bit of international cricket would do -- retire with minimum fuss. While it's a dream for any player to retire in an Indian jersey, Gambhir will be happy that he is calling it quits on his own terms even though his state team is in a spot of bother. With regular captain Nitish Rana and the talented Himmat Singh away on national duty (with Emerging India squad), Gambhir's
Mumbai City FC will look to continue with their winning ways as they take on a beleaguered Chennaiyin FC in an Indian Super League (ISL) game at the Mumbai Football Arena here on Thursday.
Azhar Ali and Asad Shafiq hit centuries to leave Pakistan in command of the third and final Test against New Zealand in Abu Dhabi despite a batting collapse that curtailed their first-innings lead. The 34-year-old Somerville finished with 4-75 while left-arm spinner Ajaz Patel took 2-100 and pace spearhead Trent Boult chipped in with 2-66. That gave Pakistan a 74-run lead -- the same advantage they held in the first Test at the same venue before losing by four runs. New Zealand were then reduced to 26-2 at stumps with Kane Williamson unbeaten on 14 and nightwatchman Somerville on one not out to leave them trailing by 48 runs with eight wickets intact. Paceman ...

The Islanders are on a five-match unbeaten run, winning four games. If they manage to avoid defeat against Chennaiyin, it will be their best unbeaten run in the history of the ISL and much of the credit has to go to their mean defence which has leaked in a mere two goals since conceding five against FC Goa.
