Defence budget to exceed 3% of GDP in military overhaul, says Taiwan's prez

Taiwanese President William Lai Ching-te has said that the island's defence budget will exceed 3 per cent of its economic output as it overhauls its military in the face of the rising threat from China. Along with the latest equipment much of it from the United States, the military is seeking funds to retain more service people with higher pay and to lengthen compulsory national service from four months to one year. In a speech Thursday to the American Chamber of Commerce, Lai said his administration is determined to "ensure that our defense budget exceeds 3 per cent of the GDP. At the same time, we will continue to reform national defense. Lai's comments were the latest reassurance to the US and domestic critics who say Taiwan is not spending enough on its own defense. The self-governing island, which relies on the US for much of its cutting-edge weaponry, currently spends about 2.45 per cent of its gross domestic product on its military. US President Donald Trump has demanded th

Taiwan can help India reduce trade deficit with China: Taiwanese dy NSA

Taiwan can help India reduce its import of electronic components from China and the best way to expand the economic engagement would be to firm up a free trade pact, Taiwanese deputy national security adviser Hsu Szu-Chien said on Thursday. In an exclusive interview to PTI, Hsu said a trade deal will pave the way for greater investment in India by Taiwanese companies in the semiconductor and other high-technology sectors as it will help to bring down the "high tariff" regime. The Taiwanese deputy national security adviser was in the national capital primarily to participate in the Raisina Dialogue, India's flagship conference on geopolitics. Hsu said there can be a match-making between technology of Taiwan and India's demographic dividends to produce high-end technology components in India that will help New Delhi cut its imports from China. It is learnt that he also held closed-door meetings with his Indian interlocutors on ways to expand the overall India-Taiwan relations. "I th

'Filled with arrogance': China lashes out at G7 over maritime security

China has lashed out at accusations it is endangering maritime safety made by top diplomats from the Group of 7 industrialised democracies in a joint statement, saying the G7 members are filled with arrogance, prejudice and malicious intentions. Even for China's generally overheated diplomatic language, the statement issued Saturday was unusually vitriolic, although it did not threaten any retaliation. In the Friday statement that sparked the Chinese response, the G7 said, We condemn China's illicit, provocative, coercive and dangerous actions that seek unilaterally to alter the status quo in such a way as to risk undermining the stability of regions, including through land reclaimations, and building of outposts, as well as their use for military purpose. We reaffirm that our basic policies on Taiwan remain unchanged and emphasize the importance of peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait as indispensable to international security and prosperity, the statement said, referring t

Taiwanese prez calls for tougher steps against rising Chinese infiltration

Taiwanese President William Lai Ching-te said Thursday tougher measures are needed to counter stepped-up Chinese infiltration, spying and other efforts to weaken the island's defences. Lai cited a range of recent incidents involving China that fall into a gray area of psychological warfare short of open armed conflict. Beijing's efforts to subvert, obtain secrets, lure members of the armed forces and influence public opinion to lose confidence in our national defence require that we step up our legal safeguards to prevent and detect such incidents, Lai said at a news conference. Lai's Democratic Progressive Party favours the island's continued de-facto independence from Beijing. China has refused almost all official contact with the DPP since Lai's predecessor, Tsai Ing-wen, was elected eight years ago. China regularly sends ships and planes into airspace and waters near the island in an effort to intimidate its 23 million people and wear down its armed forces and morale. Taiwan's

Taiwan says TSMC's move to invest $100 bn in US not due to Trump's pressure

Taiwan's president and top chipmaker TSMC held a joint news conference Thursday to defend the company's decision to invest USD 100 billion in the US, saying it stemmed from customer demand and not pressure from the Trump administration. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), the world's largest chipmaker, said earlier this week it would invest USD 100 billion in three more chip manufacturing plants, along with two packaging facilities in Arizona. The decision sparked concerns that Taiwan would gain little in return for moving some of its most advanced manufacturing processes to the US. Taiwan President Lai Ching-te denied that TSMC's investment decision was due to political pressure by the United States. US President Donald Trump had previously said that Taiwan had taken away the US chip business and that he wanted it back. "TSMC's decision is necessary for its future development. The government did not face pressure from the United States during TSMC's investment proce
