Tata Steel Kalinganagar has been honoured at the World Economic Forum (WEF) 2020 for its recent admittance into the Global Lighthouse Network. The network is a small but growing group of global corporations that are showing leadership in applying fourth industrial revolution technologies to drive financial and operational impact. Tata Steel's CEO & MD T V Narendran, who represented the company at the WEF 2020 held in Davos, accepted the award at the World Economic Forum, a Tata Steel release said. In July 2019, TSK became the first and only Indian manufacturing plant to be included in the WEF's Lighthouse Network, when 10 new factories, including TSK, were added to the Global Lighthouse Network. Tata Steel's IJmuiden plant in the Netherlands is already a member of this network, it said. Tata Steel's Kalinganagar unit has missed the steel production target for 2017-18. As against an output target of 2.7 million tonne, the unit has produced 2.5 million tonne crude steel in the last fiscal.The shortfall in steel output is despite the unit achieving hot metal production of 2.9 million tonne against the annual business plan target of 2.85 million tonne.This shows the hot metal to steel conversion process of the plant is yet to settle down to optimal operation level to yield desired result, said an analyst. The unscheduled shutdown of Blast Furnace at Tata Steel's Kalinganagar plant is set to deprive the unit of achieving its targeted capacity of 3 million tonne this fiscal.The Blast Furnace was shut down because of a technical snag on 29th of last month and would be put back in operation in another week's time. The loss of production due to the shutdown is estimated to be around 0.15 million tonne.Added to the struggle to reach and maintain the monthly average production target of 0.25 million tonne due to the teething problem of a new plant, the total shortfall in targeted output is put at 0.2 to 0.3 million tonne. As part of its long-term strategy to expand in the domestic market, the Tata Steel board today approved a plan for next phase of expansion at Kalinganagar in Odisha. The country's largest steel producer plans to add five million tonne capacity in Odisha taking the company's total domestic steel capacity to 18 million tonne over the next four years.In a BSE filing today, the company said the new expansion plan at Kalinganagar was expected to cost Rs 23,500 crore as it would include investment in raw material expansion, upstream and midstream facilities along with downstream units such as a cold rolling mill.The mode of financing for this second phase expansion at Kalinganagar would be a combination of debt and equity with project expansion expected to be completed in 48 months, informed Tata Steel.
