Older PCs cost Indian SMBs Rs 93,500 - enough to buy 3 new PCs: study

Small and medium businesses using a PC older than four years may be spending about Rs 93,500 (USD 1,279) per device on maintenance -- enough to replace the ageing hardware with three or more new computers, a study commissioned by Microsoft and Intel Thursday said. The report, by Techaisle, surveyed 2,156 SMBs across India, Australia, Indonesia, Japan and South Korea to establish a direct cost implication for SMBs from loss in productivity and security risks resulting from outdated devices. The report said despite cost implications and security risks, 49 per cent of larger SMBs surveyed and 31 per cent of small SMBs are still working on older PCs. "PCs are the productive engines for most SMBs in India, where organisations rely heavily on their devices for their day-to-day tasks. However, 3 in 10 SMBs in India surveyed have PCs that are older than four years, which significantly increases maintenance costs," Microsoft India Country General Manager (Consumer and Devices Sales) ...

KYMCO introduces SuperNEX Electric supersport motorcycle at EICMA 2018

At EICMA 2018 KYMCO announced the launch of KYMCO SuperNEX, a fusion of "supersport" and "electric" that delivers everything modern supersport riders dream of."While people have no doubt that the next era of personal transportation is electric," said Allen Ko, KYMCO Chairman. The quiet nature of the electric motor troubles motorcycle enthusiasts for the absence of the familiar roaring sound. Without the gratification of gear shifting, the simple twist-and-go interaction feels more utility-oriented, and sometimes even toy-like. Also, most electric motorcycles today lack the sustaining thrill of acceleration to the top-end after the initial rush. As a result, many sport bike lovers fear that supersport might lose its charm in the impending new electric era.Delivering on Supersport Riders' DreamsBy expanding on the insights of what people truly want, KYMCO has architected the most compelling direction for the era of electric supersport motorcycles. These design philosophies come to life ..

Google tightens political ad rules ahead of Europe elections

Google is expanding stricter requirements for political advertising to the European Union as part of efforts to curb misinformation and increase transparency ahead of the bloc's elections next year. The US tech giant said Thursday that it will require any political advertisement to disclose who is paying for it while also tightening up its identity verification process for ad buyers. Google will also publish an EU election ads transparency report and a library of political ads that anyone can search for more information on buyers, their target audience, and how the money is spent. It's an extension of a system Google brought in this year for US political ads. Facebook introduced a similar system of its own for the US, Brazil and Britain earlier this year.

First-ever 'Star Trek plane' with no moving parts built

MIT scientists have built and flown the first-ever Star Trek-inspired plane with no moving parts, paving the way for quieter, simpler aircraft with no combustion emissions. Instead of propellers, the light aircraft is powered by an "ionic wind" -- a silent but mighty flow of ions, which generates enough thrust to propel the plane over a sustained, steady flight. Unlike turbine-powered planes, the aircraft does not depend on fossil fuels to fly, according to the study published in the journal Nature. The new design is completely silent unlike propeller-driven drones. "This is the first-ever sustained flight of a plane with no moving parts in the propulsion system," said Steven Barrett, associate professor at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the US. "This has potentially opened new and unexplored possibilities for aircraft which are quieter, mechanically simpler, and do not emit combustion emissions," Barrett said. Such ion wind propulsion systems could be used to fly ...

Electronic glove to give robots sense of touch

Stanford scientists have developed an electronic glove containing sensors that could one day give robotic hands the human-like sense of touch and dexterity. In a study published in the journal Science Robotics, researchers showed that the sensors work well enough to allow a robotic hand to touch a delicate berry and handle a pingpong ball without squashing them. "This technology puts us on a path to one day giving robots the sort of sensing capabilities found in human skin," said Zhenan Bao, from Stanford University in the US. The sensors in the glove's fingertips simultaneously measure the intensity and direction of pressure, two qualities essential to achieving manual dexterity, researchers said. They must still perfect the technology to automatically control these sensors but when they do, a robot wearing the glove could have the dexterity to hold an egg between thumb and forefinger without smashing it or letting it slip. The electronic glove imitates the way layers of human skin ..
