BSNL inks partnership with Call2Action Communication

State-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam (BSNL) today said it has inked pact with Call2Action Communication India to offer telecom subscribers reward points if they allow advertisements to appear on their phones via SMSs and calls. Consent of users will be a pre-requisite, particularly in the view of telecom regulator's stringent stance on pesky calls and messages, and the reward points that are accumulated by the subscriber from advertisements (under this service) can be redeemed with partner organisations and retailers, according to a BSNL official. "This partnership can help us improve out Average Revenue Per User (ARPU) by providing our 110 million customers in India with a range of innovative new services from which they can earn significant rewards," RK Mittal, Director (Consumer Mobility), BSNL said. NSE asks software vendor to identify reasons for disruption in NOW platform

The National Stock Exchange (NSE) has asked its software vendor to analyse the reasons for last week's disruption on its web-based tool NOW, senior officials said. The exchange on May 24 witnessed a disruption in NSE NOW, which allows traders to use their own software and hardware for trading on the bourse. According to media reports, the software had got temporarily shut down for brokers and sub-brokers due to a technical problem. Now, the exchange has asked its software vendor to identify the reasons for the disruption in NSE NOW that affected traders last week and submit a report in this regard, the officials said. 'Neat on Web' or NOW is a shared computer-to-computer link and risk management tool for trading members, provided by NSE's subsidiary Dotex. This licensed trading software offers direct connectivity to the NSE for trade execution and data feeds through trading terminals, web-based browsers and mobile devices. New viruses prowling cyberspace to steal money, personal data: Advisory

Two social media-triggered spyware viruses -- 'virtual girlfriend' and 'panda banker' -- have creeped into the Indian cyberspace and can steal a user's banking details and secret data once activated unknowingly, a cyber security advisory has said. The more notorious one is personal data stealing virus 'virtual girlfriend' that "infects" a user's android-based smartphone via popular social media site Twitter. "There have been reports of a new android malware family which is being spread disguised as an adult game known as virtual girlfriend through Twitter," the Computer Emergency Response Team of India (CERT-In) said in a latest advisory. "This malware has the capability to steal the user's data on to the C2 server (command and control server used by the virus)," it said. CERT-In is the nodal agency to combat hacking, phishing and to fortify security-related defences of the Indian internet domain. New policy on electronics likely in two months: IT secretary

The government expects to finalise new National Policy on Electronics in next couple of months, which will aim to boost design and innovation along with domestic production, Electronics and IT secretary Ajay Prakash Sawhney said today. "Hopefully in couple of months we will be coming out with new National National Policy on electronics," Sawhney said at an Assocham event. He said there is huge opportunity in India for emergence of next generation devices which don't exist at the moment and the new policy will look at encouraging design and innovation for development of innovative products. "It is quite possible that dominant devices of 2025-30 are not existing today. We must not position India as not only a manufacturing hub but a hub for design innovation and manufacturing. Ahluwalia asks people to exercise caution in downloading images on devices

Union Minister S S Ahluwalia today asked people to be extra cautious while downloading images on their devices as they may contain viruses and said terrorists are also sending such pictures with their embedded messages in them. "They (cyber criminals) will send you a picture of Monalisa and out of curiosity you will download that Monalisa's picture but virus will be embedded in it. The terrorists are using these pictures to send their message embedded in the pictures," Minister of state for electronics and IT Ahluwalia said at a FICCI event. US commerce chief warns of disruption from EU privacy rules

US Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross warned today that the new EU privacy rules in effect since last week could lead to serious problems for business, medical research and law enforcement on both sides of the Atlantic. Ross said US officials were "deeply concerned" about how the General Data Protection Regulation would be implemented, while noting that the guidance so far has been "too vague." The law which took effect May 25 establishes the key principle that individuals must explicitly grant permission for their data to be used, and give consumers a right to know who is accessing their information and what it will be used for.
