Mobile makers allege duty evasion in handset imports from Asean
The domestic cellphone industry has flagged possible duty evasion in imports of the completely built unit (CBU) of mobile phones, suspected of Chinese origin, from Asean countries under the free trade route. In a letter to Revenue Secretary Hasmukh Adhia, Indian Cellular Association (ICA) said there is a possibility of customs duty evasion in import of CBUs from Asean countries at zero duty as the mobile devices contain more than 65 per cent material from non-Asean origin. Government has imposed 20 per cent import duty on mobile phones to promote indigenous manufacturing of the devices as they have security implications. "We wish to bring to your notice the possibility of substantial case of customs duty evasion in the case of import of CBU of mobile phones from Asean countries, specially Vietnam, Indonesia and Thailand, at nil rate," ICA National President Pankaj Mohindroo said in the letter. Govt reconstitutes FSDC, includes secretaries from revenue dept, MeitY
The government has reconstituted the Financial Stability and Development Council (FSDC) to include secretaries from the revenue department as well as Ministry of Information Technology (MeitY). Inclusion of MeitY Secretary in the council becomes significant given the offtake of digital transactions in the country, and the rising apprehensions around safety of personal data. The FSDC, chaired by the Union Finance Minister, was set up in 2010 by the then Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee. The council comprises RBI Governor, Sebi Chairman, finance secretary, and secretaries in the departments of Economic Affairs, Financial Services and Corporate Affairs. The FSDC also has Chief Economic Advisor and chairpersons of insurance regulator IRDAI, pension regulator PFRDA and Insolvency and Bankruptcy Board (IBBI) as members. Hyderabad varsity launches new info security course
The University of Hyderabad today launched a new Master of Technology (MTech) programme in information security with 'Cyber Security' as a specialised stream. It is a two-year full-time programme to be conducted from the academic year 2018-19, a press release said. A surveillance operation was allegedly conducted by the Pakistan military which collected data from UK, US and Australian officials and diplomats.Researchers from a US based mobile security company, Lookout found Western officials were unintentionally caught up in a data-gathering operation. For collecting data, it used surveillanceware tools dubbed Tangel (for iOS) and Stealth Mango (for Android).According to the Business Insider, Lookout researchers claimed that members of Pakistani military hacked data of civilians, government officials, diplomats, and military personnel in Pakistan, India, Iraq and the UAE.Around 15gb of data has been compromised. Facebook has announced that it is expanding its unusual approach at combating revenge porn floating on its platform to the US, UK, and Canada.The pilot program had been running only in Australia in partnership with only the office of the Australian government's e-Safety Commissioner.The unusual method, which is still work in progress, uses a technical approach called hashing to tag sexually explicit photos that a user fears may be circulating without their consent, The Verge reported.Hashing adds a numerical code to an image which Facebook says cannot be read by humans. Apple to partner Volkswagen in employee transport technology
