Facebook chief Mark Zuckerberg faces tough questions later today at the European Parliament over the fallout from the Cambridge Analytica data breach scandal. The social network boss's appearance will be livestreamed to the public after angry EU lawmakers objected to initial plans to host the hearing in Brussels behind closed doors. His grilling by the heads of the parliament's political groups this evening comes three days before the EU introduces sweeping new personal data protection rules, which the Facebook chief has now welcomed. "Great news for EU citizens," European Parliament President Antonio Tajani tweeted yesterday about the decision to stream the hearing after days of bitter wrangling. MEPs had demanded that Zuckerberg show the transparency the scandal calls for. Facebook admitted that up to 87 million users may have had their data hijacked by British consultancy Cambridge Analytica, which worked for US President Donald Trump during his 2016 campaign. Novel material may lead to self-healing robots

Scientists have created a material that spontaneously repairs itself under extreme mechanical damage, and could be used to build self-healing robots. The soft-matter composite material developed by researchers at the Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) in the US is composed of liquid metal droplets suspended in a soft elastomer. When damaged, the droplets rupture to form new connections with neighbouring droplets and reroute electrical signals without interruption. Circuits produced with conductive traces of this material remain fully and continuously operational when severed, punctured, or had material removed. Applications for its use include bio-inspired robotics, human-machine interaction, and wearable computing. Since the material also exhibits high electrical conductivity that does not change when stretched, it is ideal for use in power and data transmission. "Other research in soft electronics has resulted in materials that are elastic and deformable, but still vulnerable to ...

New 3D printer can create complex tissues

Scientists have developed a 3D printer that can build therapeutic biomaterials, paving the way for on-demand printing of complex artificial tissues needed in transplants and surgeries. The technique, developed by researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in the US, uses a light-based process called stereolithography, and it takes advantage of a customised 3D printer that has two key components. The first is a custom-built microfluidic chip - a small, flat platform similar in size to a computer chip - with multiple inlets that each "prints" a different material. The other component is a digital micromirror, an array of more than a million tiny mirrors that each moves independently. "Tissues are wonderfully complex structures, so to engineer artificial versions of them that function properly, we have to recreate their complexity," said Ali Khademhosseini, a professor at UCLA. "Our new approach offers a way to build complex biocompatible structures made from ...

UK lawmakers appeals to EU to help in Facebook probe

The head of Parliament's media committee has appealed to European lawmakers to put questions to Mark Zuckerberg on his behalf when the Facebook chief gives evidence today. Committee chair Damian Collins wrote to Facebook again yesterday, expressing disappointment at its "lack of transparency" in dealing with his investigation into fake news. He shared his letter with European lawmakers so they could question him about what Facebook knew about political consultancy Cambridge Analytica's harvesting of Facebook users' data. Collins says: "if Mark Zuckerberg chooses not to address our questions directly, we are asking colleagues at the European Parliament to help us get answers particularly on who knew what at the company, and when, about the data breach and the non-transparent use of political adverts which continue to undermine our democracy.

Microsoft pledges to extend EU data rights worldwide

Microsoft says it's committing to giving users worldwide the same data and privacy rights being offered to Europeans under new regulations there. That means no matter where you live, you'll be able to see what Microsoft collects about you and correct or delete that information if necessary. You'll also be able to object to the use of data for marketing and other purposes. Some companies have been limiting those options to only people in the European Union, where the new rules take effect on Friday. Facebook, for instance, has said it's offering the same settings and controls worldwide, but has stopped short of promising European-style rights around the globe. Microsoft made its promise explicit in a blog post and new privacy policy today.
