UK says it will declare Russia's Wagner group banned terrorist organisation

The UK announced Wednesday it will declare Russia's Wagner mercenary group a banned terrorist organisation, saying it remains a threat to global security even after the death of leader Yevgeny Prigozhin. The government said an order will be introduced in Parliament to proscribe the group under the Terrorism Act. The designation, once approved by lawmakers, will bar membership in or support for Wagner, which has played a major fighting role during Russia's invasion of Ukraine. It also has operated in Syria and several African nations. Home Secretary Suella Braverman said Wagner has been involved in looting, torture and barbarous murders. Its operations in Ukraine, the Middle East and Africa are a threat to global security. They are terrorists, plain and simple - and this proscription order makes that clear in U.K. law, she said. The ban will allow U.K. authorities to seize the organisation's assets, though that power is largely symbolic as Wagner is not known to operate in Britain.

The Pune police control room received a phone call, originating from the US, in the wee hours of Tuesday in which the person on the other side informed about presence of a "suspected terrorist" in Mumbai, said an official. The call was received at around 1 am and the Pune police immediately contacted their counterparts in Mumbai and informed about it. "The police control room received a call in which the caller informed us about a particular person in Mumbai, asked us to check on him, and claimed that person is a suspected terrorist. Gunmen kill at least 23, wounds 12 in an attack on village in central Mali

Armed gunmen killed at least 23 people and wounded 12 in an attack on a village in central Mali, officials said Sunday. Sidi Mohamed El Bechir, governor of the Bandiagara region where the attack took place, said unidentified men killed dozens of people and set fire to several homes in the village of Yarou on Friday. The assailants stayed in the village until 7 pm and burned down part of the village, smashed stores and took away the villagers' cattle, said Amadou Lougu, president of the regional youth organisation, on Sunday. The attack has not been claimed. Communities across central and northern Mali have been in the grips of protracted armed violence since 2012. Extremist rebels were forced from power in the West African nation's northern cities the following year, with the help of a French-led military operation. But they regrouped in the desert and began launching attacks on the Malian army and its allies. Friday's attack in the central Mopti region took place on the same day
