Test cheating probe Toyota plant raided on 11.2 mn vehicles sales claim

Japanese transport officials raided the plant of a Toyota group company on Tuesday to investigate cheating on engine testing, as the company reported it kept its status as the world's top automaker in 2023, selling 11.2 million vehicles. Hours after the probe began at Toyota Industries Corp.'s plant in Hekinan, Aichi Prefecture, central Japan, Toyota Chairman Akio Toyoda vowed to steer the company out of scandal and ensure the Japanese automaker sticks to making good cars. My job is to steer the way for where the overall group should go, Toyoda said. He apologised, bowing deeply, and stressed the group vision was rooted in the Toyoda founding family's ideas of empowering the genba, or the workers on the plant floor, to make good cars that lead to people's happiness. The testing scandal comes at a time of otherwise stellar performance for Toyota, which makes the Camry sedan, Prius hybrid and Lexus luxury models. Its group global vehicle sales for 2023 were a record 11.22 million uni

Toyota's unit raided after fake tests lead to suspension of all shipments

Japanese transport ministry officials inspected Toyota subsidiary Daihatsu on Thursday, one day after officials announced it was suspending the small car unit's shipments of all vehicles in and outside Japan after an investigation found improper testing involving 64 models. The safety test irregularities earlier this year prompted an independent panel investigation, which found widespread and systematic problems at Osaka-based Daihatsu Motor Co. It is the latest of safety or other violations found at at least five of Japan's major automakers in recent years. On Thursday, transport ministry officials began a deeper investigation at Daihatsu's offices over the systematic safety scandal that apparently persisted for decades. It's extremely regrettable, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi said Thursday. It damaged the trust of car owners and has shaken the foundation of the automobile certification system. Hayashi urged Daihatsu officials to fully explain the situation. So far,

Toyota initiates process to enhance manufacturing capacity in India

Japanese auto major Toyota Motor Corporation has initiated the process to enhance manufacturing capacity in India with two plants running at full capacity in the country, a senior company official said on Thursday. Speaking to media on the sidelines of the Japan Mobility Show here, Toyota Motor Corporation Board Member and Executive Vice President Yoichi Miyazaki confirmed the development and said the company is reaching full plant capacity utilisation in India. "We have started a discussion (on the matter)," he said when asked if the company is looking to make fresh investment on capacity enhancement in the country. He said the demand for automobiles, especially higher segment cars, has surged in India post Covid. "After Covid, the market recovery is very strong (in India) in comparison to other countries so we believe demand itself is very strong in India," the company executive said. Multiple green tech in cars to help meet net zero targets in India: Toyota

There is a need to support a multi-pathway approach in terms of green technologies in cars in a country as big and diverse as India to achieve carbon neutrality goals, a senior Toyota executive said on Tuesday. Multiple technology solutions at different price points are required to cater to different sets of customers in order to cut carbon footprint, he noted. In an interaction here, senior Toyota executives emphasised on the need to treat all technologies fairly to achieve carbon reduction goals. Toyota Daihatsu Engineering and Manufacturing Co-Executive Vice President Pras Ganesh said India is large enough to utilise multiple solutions, including hybrid and battery electric technologies. He was replying to a query regarding Toyota's product road map strategy in the country where the government favours battery electric vehicles (BEVs) over hybrid cars in terms of taxation. The total tax incidence on hybrid vehicles in India is 43 per cent, inclusive of GST, while BEVs attract a

Hybrid cars optimal solution to scale electrification of vehicles: Toyota

Japanese auto major Toyota on Thursday said hybrid cars will be an "optimal solution" to build scale for increased use of electrified vehicles in India, according to a senior executive. In a virtual press briefing with global media prior to Japan Mobility Show, Toyota Daihatsu Engineering and Manufacturing Co Executive Vice President Pras Ganesh said multiple green technologies were required to cater to varying needs of different regions in a vast country like India. "The hybrid electric vehicle we think is maybe an optimal solution to begin scale in terms of electrification..around 40 per cent of the distance and around 60 per cent of the time on a hybrid electric vehicle based on Indian statistical testing, is actually on zero emission," he noted. It's a very good solution without the need for any additional infrastructure, Ganesh said. He noted that looking at the size of the country, multiple solutions were required when it came to offering electrified vehicles. "Even if you t

Toyota and energy company Idemitsu to cooperate on EV battery technology

Japan's top automaker Toyota agreed on Thursday to work with Idemitsu, a major Japanese oil company, on technology for mass production of solid-state batteries that promise to be a key component in future electric vehicles. The deal is an important step for Toyota Motor Corp., which has promised to speed up its battery EV offerings and catch up after having fallen behind rivals like Tesla and China's BYD. Toyota lags partly because of its success in hybrids, like the Prius, that are equipped with both gasoline engines and battery-powered motors. Toyota, with its production finesse, and Idemitsu, which owns technologies in materials, said they are aiming for successful commercialisation of all-solid-state batteries in 2027 or 2028, followed by full-scale mass production. With repeated efforts involving trial and error, we have succeeded in developing a material that is more stable and less prone to crack, Toyota Chief Executive Koji Sato told reporters in Tokyo, after shaking hands .
