Yemen's government signs $1 billion aid package with UAE-based fund

Yemen's internationally recognized government signed a deal with the Arab Monetary Fund on Sunday, state media said, paving the way for the Saudi-backed administration to receive USD 1 billion of economic aid. The Abu Dhabi-based fund, a sub-organization of the 22-member Arab League, will pay out the $1 billion program from 2022 to 2025. The economic deal aims to help the Yemeni government establish monetary and fiscal stability through wide-ranging economic reforms, Saba news agency said. Yemen's civil war, which is entering its eighth year, has decimated the country's economy and pushed half of the population to the brink of famine. More than 150,000 people have been killed in the conflict, including over 14,500 civilians. On average food is 60% more expensive than it was last year, largely due to the war in Ukraine that has cut off the country's critical wheat imports from Eastern Europe. The conflict began in 2014 when the Iranian-backed Houthi rebels seized the capital of Sanaa

Saudi, UAE back OPEC cuts as US envoy warns of 'economic uncertainty'

Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates defended on Monday a decision by OPEC and its allies to cut oil production, even as an American envoy warned of economic uncertainty ahead for the world. While cordial, the comments at the Abu Dhabi International Petroleum Exhibition and Conference showed the stark divide between the United States and Gulf Arab countries it supports militarily in the wider Middle East. Saudi Arabia's energy minister, Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman, hinted at that in brief remarks to the event, noting that upcoming UN climate change summits will be held in Egypt and the United Arab Emirates. We don't owe it to anybody but us, the prince said to applause. Emirati Energy Minister Suhail al-Mazrouei echoed that defence. While saying that OPEC and its allies are "only a phone call away if the requirements are there to raise production, he offered no suggestion such a boost would be on its way anytime soon. I can assure you that we in the United Arab Emirates, as w

Germany hails 1st delivery of 'green' hydrogen from UAE, to replace coal

Germany took formal delivery Friday of its first, modest, batch of hydrogen from the United Arab Emirates, a "green" fuel it hopes will help replace coal and gas used by energy-intensive industries in future. Germany is scrambling to substitutenatural gas imports from Russia while also staying on track for its ambitious goal of cutting greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2025. One alternative is energy-rich hydrogen gas, provided it is made with the help of renewable energy. Since hydrogen is difficult to transport it is sometimes stored as liquid ammonia. The delivery in Hamburg was modest: just a single container with 13 metric tons of ammonia. Still, it was symbolic enough for German Economy Minister Robert Habeck to hold a joint ceremony with the UAE's climate envoy, Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, and the CEO of German metals manufacturer Aurubis, which is testing the fuel to make copper wire.

T20 WC: Dutch register 2nd win, SL back in business with big win over UAE

Netherlands made heavy weather of a small target before eking out a five-wicket win against Namibia in the T20 World Cup here on Tuesday. This is Netherlands' second victory in as many games and keeps them firmly in contention for a place in the next round. Netherlands dished out a fine bowling effort to restrict Namibia to 121 for six before taking the game deep. They completed the task in 19.3 overs in their first round Group A match. Sitting pretty at 92 for one, Netherlands made a harakiri towards the end to allow Namibia to make a comeback. Vikramjit Singh (39 off 31) and Max O'Dowd (35 off 35) got Netherlands' chase off to a blazing start, sharing 59 runs for the opening wicket. However, from 92 for one, Netherlands slumped to 101 for four, thanks to twin blows from left-arm pacer JJ Smit (2/24) in the 16th over. Skipper Scott Edwards did no good and perished in the next over. But Bas de Leede (30 not out off 30) held his nerves, and in the company of Tim Pringle (8 not ou
