India, UAE can benefit from energy, skills, education cooperation: Report

Economies of India and the UAE can benefit significantly from their free trade agreement by sharing knowledge and best practices in several areas of mutual interest such as education, energy, skills and defence, according to a report by Deloitte. Both the countries have implemented the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) from May 1 this year to boost bilateral trade and investments. It is aimed at increasing the trade to USD 100 billion in the coming years. "Under the preferential trade agreement, the two economies may benefit from sharing knowledge and best practices in several areas of mutual interest," the report said. It said the Indian economy is heavily dependent on crude oil imports to meet its domestic requirements and the current geopolitical tensions between Russia and Ukraine and shrinking supplies from Iran are further affecting macroeconomic fundamentals. "These turbulences suggest that India must work towards decreasing its energy dependence by explori

Mass firing at UAE newspaper Al Roeya raises question of censorship

The story about high fuel prices was safe, editors agreed, even under the strict press laws of the United Arab Emirates. Instead, it unleashed a firestorm at Al Roeya newspaper in Dubai. Within days, top editors were interrogated. Within weeks, dozens of employees were fired and the print paper declared dissolved. The newspaper's publisher, Abu Dhabi-based International Media Investments, or IMI, said Al Roeya's closure stems only from its transformation into a new Arabic language business outlet with CNN. However, eight people with direct knowledge of the newspaper's mass firings told The Associated Press that the layoffs came in the immediate aftermath of the article on the UAE's gas prices. Their accounts, given on condition anonymity for fear of reprisals, show the limits of speech in the autocratic nation that tightly controls its domestic media. Self-censorship is rife among journalists at local outlets expected to provide a stream of good news in the UAE, which advertises ..

UAE, NASA missions find 'patchy' proton auroras in Mars atmosphere

The United Arab Emirate's Mars Mission (EMM) and NASA's MAVEN probe have found "patchy" proton auroras in Mars' skies, providing new insights into the red planet's atmosphere. An aurora is a natural light display in a planet's sky, predominantly seen in high-latitude regions such as the northern lights, or the aurora borealis, seen from the Earth. The new aurora found by the team is formed when the solar wind directly impacts Mars' upper atmosphere and emits ultraviolet light as it slows down. It was discovered in snapshots of the dayside disk obtained by the Emirates Mars Ultraviolet Spectrometer (EMUS), which observes the planet's upper atmosphere. When the aurora occurs, small regions of the planet become much brighter, signifying intense localised energy in the atmosphere. "Our discovery of these patchy proton aurora adds a new kind of event to the long list of those currently studied by EMM and challenges our existing views of how the proton aurora on Mars' dayside are formed
