The country is facing an economic slowdown but the prime minister is "not worried about employment for the youth", the Indian Youth Congress alleged on Sunday. Srinivas BV, the organisation's national president who led a protest at the Indian Youth Congress' office in central Delhi, said, "We mark this day -- September 17 -- as 'national unemployment day.' G Kishan Reddy concludes 24-hour fast in support of unemployed youth

Union Minister and BJP Telangana unit president G Kishan Reddy on Thursday concluded his 24-hour fast against the BRS government's alleged negligence towards unemployed youth. Former Union Minister Prakash Javadekar, who is BJP's election in-charge for Telangana, offered lime juice to Kishan Reddy marking the conclusion of the fast. Reddy began his fast on Wednesday at the Dharna Chowk here. However, he was "forcibly" shifted by police from the Dharna Chowk Wednesday evening for "continuing" the protest beyond the permitted time. Mild tension prevailed at the Dharna Chowk on Wednesday evening as BJP activists raised slogans and opposed the police action even as Reddy was shifted to the state BJP headquarters. Reddy, however, continued his fast at the party office. BJP General Secretary Tarun Chugh, in-charge of party affairs in Telangana, on Wednesday night condemned the police action and claimed that Reddy fell unconscious at the protest site. US applications for unemployment benefits fall to lowest level in 7 months

The number of Americans applying for unemployment benefits last week fell to the lowest level in seven months with labor market seemingly resistent to the higher interest rates put in to place, in part to cool hiring. U.S. applications for jobless claims fell by 13,000 to 216,000 for the week ending Sept. 2, the Labor Department reported Thursday. The four-week moving average of claims, which smooths out some of the week-to-week volatility, fell by 8,500 to 229,250. Jobless claim applications are seen as representative of the number of layoffs in a given week. Overall, 1.68 million people were collecting unemployment benefits the week that ended August 26, about 40,000 fewer than the previous week.

China skips update on surging youth unemployment as economic slump deepens

China's government skipped giving an update on a politically sensitive spike in unemployment among young people as official data Tuesday showed an economic slump deepened in July. Meanwhile, the central bank unexpectedly cut a key interest rate in a sign of growing official urgency about shoring up economic growth that fell sharply in the three months ending in June. Youth unemployment is sensitive after a survey in June found a record 21.3 per cent of potential urban workers aged 16 to 24 couldn't find work after an economic rebound following the end of anti-virus controls fizzled out. Publication of unemployment by age group is suspended while the National Bureau of Statistics considers how it measures data, according to a bureau spokesperson, Fu Linghui. Fu said a survey found overall unemployment among urban workers was 5.3 per cent, up 0.1 percentage points from June. The employment situation is generally stable, Fu said at a news conference. SP members stage walkout from UP Assembly over unemployment issue

Members of the Samajwadi Party walked out of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly on Friday, the fifth day of the Monsoon session, over the issue of unemployment in the state. During the Question Hour in the Vidhan Sabha, the SP members had asked the Minister of Labour and Employment Anil Rajbhar about the major employment schemes being implemented by the Labour Department at present and the number of educated unemployed youth in the state. However, dissatisfied with Rajbhar's response, the SP members staged a walkout and raised anti-government slogans. "Will the government, keeping the above details on the table of the House, tell the total number of educated unemployed -- Inter, BA, MA, Diploma, B.Tech, M.Tech, PhD degree holders -- in the state and how many of these people have been given jobs by the Labour Department in the last two years? If not, why?" asked SP MLA Sangram Yadav. Responding to Yadav's question, Rajbhar said that the work of providing employment opportunities

Congressional Budget Office predicts slower economic, job growth into 2024

The Congressional Budget Office reported Wednesday that economic and job growth so far this year has been stronger than forecast in February, but an updated outlook sees parts of the economy as weakening through 2024. The latest 10-year budget and economic outlook from the nonpartisan office shows how difficult it is to figure out where the United States is going in the wake of the pandemic. Many economists and investors were caught off guard as Federal Reserve interest rate increases, intended to combat high inflation, have not led to mass layoffs and a recession. Rather, growth and hiring have stayed relatively solid. The CBO said it expects rates to continue to rise, as well as slower growth in the gross domestic product for the rest of this year and unemployment reaching 4.7 per cent by the end of 2024. In February, the agency projected that the unemployment rate would jump to 5.1 per cent. It currently stands at 3.6 per cent. The CBO now estimates that rate will end the year a

3-fold rise in unemployment in Haryana under BJP rule: Deepender Hooda

Congress leader Deepender Singh Hooda said the unemployment rate has increased three-fold in Haryana under BJP rule and slammed the Manohar Lal Khattar government over the "appalling" situation. In a reply to a question in Parliament, Union Minister of State for Labour and Employment Rameswar Teli on Thursday said the unemployment rate in Haryana was 2.9 per cent in 2013-14 (when Congress was in power), which increased to 9.0 per cent in 2021-22, the Congress leader said in a statement here. "If we look at the unemployment rate at the national level, it is 4.1 per cent, which is less than half the unemployment rate in Haryana," Deepender Hooda, son of former Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, said. "This appalling situation despite the fact that Haryana is surrounded by the national capital from three sides. Haryana is the only state in the country where the unemployment rate has increased three times during the BJP rule," he said. He claimed Haryana has become number on
