During UNSC tenure, India had to stand alone at some instances: Amb Kamboj

During the 2021-22 tenure as non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, there were instances when India had to stand alone but it did not let go of the principles it believed in, New Delhi's envoy here has said. India assumed the monthly rotating presidency of the UN Security Council (UNSC) on December 1, the second time in its two-year tenure as an elected member of the Council in 2021-22. India had earlier assumed UNSC presidency in August 2021. During the last two years, we spoke out in support of peace, security and prosperity. We did not hesitate in raising our voice against the common enemies of humanity, such as terrorism, India's Permanent Representative to the UN and President of the 15-nation UN Security Council for the month of December Ambassador Ruchira Kamboj said Thursday. In a wrap-up briefing for non-members of the Security Council on its work for the month of December before the holiday week, Kamboj highlighted the packed agenda of the Council for the month

UK backs India, Germany, Japan, Brazil as permanent members of UNSC

The UK has voiced support for India, Germany, Japan and Brazil to sit as permanent members in an expanded UN Security Council. Speaking during the General Assembly debate on Security Council reform on Thursday, UK Ambassador Barbara Woodward said that the United Kingdom has long called for the expansion of the Security Council in both the permanent and non-permanent categories. Our position is well known. The United Kingdom has long called for the expansion of the Security Council in both the permanent and non-permanent categories, Woodward said. We support the creation of new permanent seats for India, Germany, Japan and Brazil, as well as permanent African representation on the Council. We also support an expansion of the non-permanent category of membership, taking the Security Council's total membership to somewhere in the mid-twenties, she said. Woodward said with these changes, the Council would be more representative of the world today. And, coupled with a renewed commitmen

US, Russia clash over responsibility for Poland missile strike at UNSC

The US and its Western allies clashed with Russia at the UN Security Council on Wednesday over responsibility for a deadly missile strike in Poland near the Ukrainian border, an event the UN political chief called "a frightening reminder of the absolute need to prevent any further escalation" of the nine-month war in Ukraine. US Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield told the council: "This tragedy would never have happened but for Russia's needless invasion of Ukraine and its recent missile assaults against Ukraine's civilian infrastructure." Russia's UN Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia countered, accusing Ukraine and Poland of trying "to provoke a direct clash between Russia and NATO". The US and Albania had called for a council update on the situation in Ukraine last week, and the meeting was dominated by Tuesday's missile strike in Poland that killed two farm workers. Nebenzia pointed to statements by Ukraine's president and Polish officials initially indicating Russia was responsible. .

For what reason, Japan, India, Ukraine not UNSC permanent member: Zelenskyy

Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has questioned why countries like India, Japan, Brazil and his own nation are not permanent members of the UN Security Council and said the day will come when this will be resolved. There was a lot of talking about reforming the UN. How did it all end? No result, Zelenskyy said in his pre-recorded message to the world leaders at the UN General Assembly's General Debate on Wednesday. If you look carefully at our peace formula, you will see that its implementation is already becoming a de facto reform of the United Nations. Our formula is universal, and unites the North and the South of the world. It calls for the world's majority, and encourages to expand the representation of those who remained unheard. This is an imbalance when Africa, Latin America, most of Asia, Central and Eastern Europe comply with the right of veto, that they themselves never had, he said. And this is what Ukraine is talking about. And have you ever heard such words from .

Significant increase in presence of ISIL-K in Afghanistan: India tells UNSC

India has told the UN Security Council that there is a significant increase in ISIL-K presence in Afghanistan, as it warned that linkages between proscribed outfits such as Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed and provocative statements by other terror groups pose a direct threat to the region's peace and stability. As we have repeatedly stated at the Security Council, India has direct stakes in ensuring the return of peace and stability, given our position as a contiguous neighbour and long-standing partner of Afghanistan, as well as our strong historical and civilisational linkages to the Afghan people, India's Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador Ruchira Kamboj said. Speaking at the UNSC briefing on Afghanistan Monday requested by Russia under the Chinese presidency of the Council, Kamboj underlined that on terrorism, the recent findings of the 1988 Sanctions Committee's Analytical Support and the Sanctions Monitoring Team Report indicate that the current .

For the first time, India votes against Russia in UNSC on Ukraine

India for the first time on Wednesday voted against Russia during a procedural vote at the United Nations Security Council on Ukraine, as the 15-member powerful UN body invited Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to address a meeting through a video tele-conference. This is for the first time that India has voted against Russia on the issue of Ukraine, after the Russian military action began in February. So far, New Delhi has abstained at the UN Security Council on Ukraine, much to the annoyance of the Western powers led by the United States. Western nations, including the US, have imposed major economic and other sanctions on Russia following the aggression. India has not criticised Russia for its aggression against Ukraine. New Delhi has repeatedly called upon the Russian and Ukrainian sides to return to the path of diplomacy and dialogue, and also expressed its support for all diplomatic efforts to end the conflict between the two countries. India currently is a non-permanen
