Taiwan selling more to US than China in major shift away from Beijing

Whether it's tapioca balls or computer chips, Taiwan is stretching toward the United States and away from China the world's No. 2 economy that threatens to take the democratically ruled island by force if necessary. That has translated to the world's biggest maker of computer chips which power everything from medical equipment to cellphones announcing bigger investments in the U.S. last month after a boost from the Biden administration. Soon afterward, a Taiwanese semiconductor company said it was ending its two-decade-long run in mainland China amid a global race to gain the edge in the high-tech industry. These changes at a time of an intensifying China-U.S. rivalry reflect Taiwan's efforts to reduce its reliance on Beijing and insulate itself from Chinese pressure while forging closer economic and trade ties with the United States, its strongest ally. The shift also is taking place as China's economic growth has been weak and global businesses are looking to diversify following

China, Russia reaffirm close ties as Moscow presses offensive in Ukraine

Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese leader Xi Jinping on Thursday reaffirmed their no-limits partnership that has deepened as both countries face rising tensions with the West, and they criticized US military alliances in Asia and the Pacific region. At their summit in Beijing, Putin thanked Xi for China's proposals for ending the war in Ukraine, which have been rejected by Ukraine and its Western supporters as largely following the Kremlin's line. Putin's two-day state visit to one of his strongest allies and trading partners comes as Russian forces are pressing an offensive in northeastern Ukraine's Kharkiv region in the most significant border incursion since the full-scale invasion began on February 24, 2022. China claims to take a neutral position in the conflict, but it has backed the Kremlin's contentions that Russia was provoked into attacking Ukraine by the West, and it continues to supply key components needed by Moscow for weapons production. US cites misuse of AI by China, Beijing protests Washington's restrictions

US officials raised concerns about China's misuse of AI while Beijing's representatives rebuked Washington over "restrictions and pressure" on artificial intelligence, the governments said separately on Wednesday, a day after a meeting in Geneva on the technology. Summaries of the closed-door talks between high-level envoys, which covered AI's risks and ways to manage it, hinted at the tension between Beijing and Washington over the rapidly advancing technology that has become another flashpoint in bilateral relations. China and the United States exchanged perspectives on their respective approaches to AI safety and risk management in the candid and constructive discussions a day earlier, National Security Council spokesperson Adrienne Watson said in a statement. Beijing said the two sides exchanged views in-depth, professionally, and constructively. The first such US-China talks on AI were the product of a November meeting between Presidents Joe Biden and Xi Jinping in San Francisc

Biden hits Chinese imports with tariffs to safeguard American workers

US President Joe Biden has imposed heavy tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles, batteries, steel, solar cells, and aluminium, saying it would ensure that American workers are not held back by unfair trade practices. These include a 100 per cent tariff on electric vehicles, a 50 per cent tariff on semiconductors, and a 25 per cent tariff each on electric vehicle batteries from China. In his address to the nation from the Rose Garden of the White House, Biden said America can continue to buy any kind of car they want, but we're never going to allow China to unfairly control the market for these cars. Period. I want fair competition with China, not conflict. We are in a stronger position to win that economic competition of the 21st century against China than anyone else because we're investing in America again, he said. Biden alleged that for years, the Chinese government has poured state money into Chinese companies across a whole range of industries: steel and aluminium, ...

US suggests additional tariffs if China moves EV production to Mexico

The Biden administration is suggesting that additional tariffs could be put in place if the Chinese makers of electric vehicles try to move their production to Mexico to avoid newly announced import taxes. President Joe Biden on Tuesday directed the office of the U.S. Trade Representative to impose a total tariff in excess of 102% on Chinese EVs, as well as directing new tariffs on other products including steel, aluminum, computer chips and solar cells. But Chinese EV company BYD has previously indicated that it was looking at factory sites in Mexico for the Mexican market, creating a possible loophole to avoid the expanded tariffs. Asked at the White House news briefing about new tariffs should Chinese companies launch production in Mexico, U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai said, Stay tuned. Tai said that additional tariffs would require a separate pathway from the Section 301 review of the Trade Act of 1974. That four-year review led to the tariffs on $18 billion worth of

Biden blocks a crypto mining firm from land ownership near military base

President Joe Biden has issued an order blocking a Chinese-backed cryptocurrency mining firm from owning land near a Wyoming nuclear missile base. The order forces the divestment of property operated as a crypto mining facility near the Francis E. Warren Air Force Base. It also forces the removal of certain equipment owned by MineOne Partners Ltd., a firm that is partly owned by the Chinese state. This comes as the US is slated on Tuesday to issue major new tariffs on electric vehicles, semiconductors, solar equipment, and medical supplies imported from China, according to a US official and another person familiar with the plan. The divestment order was made in coordination with the US Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States a little-known but potentially powerful government agency tasked with investigating corporate deals for national security concerns that holds power to force the company to change. A 2018 law granted CFIUS the authority to review real estate ...

Trump claims Chinese migrants building US army; migrants tell another story

It was 7 a.m. on a recent Friday when Wang Gang, a 36-year-old Chinese immigrant, jostled for a day job in New York City's Flushing neighbourhood. When a potential employer pulled up near the street corner, Wang and dozens of other men swarmed around the car. They were hoping to be picked for work on a construction site, at a farm, as a mover anything that would pay. Wang had no luck, even as he waited for two more hours. It would be another day without a job since he crossed the southern US border illegally in February. The daily struggle of Chinese immigrants in Flushing is a far cry from the picture former President Donald Trump and other Republicans have sought to paint of them as a coordinated group of military-age men who have come to the United States to build an army and attack America. Since the start of the year, as the Chinese newcomers adjust to life in the US, Trump has alluded to fighting age or military age Chinese men at least six times and suggested at least twice

Chinese army criticises US for ship's passage through Taiwan Strait

China's military criticized a U.S. destroyer's passage through the Taiwan Strait, which occurred less than two weeks before the island's new president takes office and while Washington and Beijing are making uneven efforts to restore regular military exchanges. Navy Senior Capt. Li Xi, spokesman for the Eastern Theater Command, accused the U.S. of having publicly hyped the passage of the USS Halsey on Wednesday. In a statement, Li said the command, which oversees operations around the strait, organized naval and air forces to monitor" the ship's transit and handle matters in accordance with laws and regulations. The Navy's 7th Fleet said the Halsey conducted a routine Taiwan Strait transit on May 8 through waters where high-seas freedoms of navigation and overflight apply in accordance with international law." The Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer transited through a corridor in the Strait that is beyond the territorial sea of any coastal state, the fleet's statement ...
