Global shares sink after US Fed notes dent hopes of rate hikes ending

Global stocks followed Wall Street lower Thursday after notes from a US Federal Reserve meeting dented hopes interest rate hikes are finished. London, Hong Kong, Paris and Seoul declined. Shanghai and Wall Street futures advanced. Oil prices rose. Wall Street's benchmark S&P 500 lost 0.8% on Wednesday after minutes from the Fed's latest meeting suggested board members are unsure what to do after raising their key lending rate to a two-decade high. Traders had hoped the board would decide inflation was under control and last month's rate hike was the last. Fed officials face a tough balancing act between the risk of an inadvertent over-tightening of policy against the cost of an insufficient one, said Tan Boon Heng of Mizuho Bank in a report. In early trading, the FTSE 100 in London fell 0.3% to 7,332.01. The CAC 40 in Paris lost 0.4% to 7,233.00 and the DAX in Frankfurt retreated 0.3% to 15,738.25. On Wall Street, futures for the S&P 500 and the Dow Jones Industrial Average ...

BoE set to join Fed in raising interest rates again amid high UK inflation

The Bank of England is set to raise interest rates Thursday for the 14th time in a row to a fresh 15-year high and keep the door open for further increases in the months to come as it tries to tamp down persistently high inflation. Most economists think the UK central bank will increase its benchmark rate by a quarter of a percentage point, to 5.25 per cent. There had been fears, certainly among hard-pressed households and businesses, that the bank would repeat its outsized half-point increase from June. But figures last month showing that inflation fell more than anticipated to 7.9 per cent eased the pressure to act as aggressively again. With inflation still four times the 2 per cent target, the Bank of England has little choice but to raise the bank rate again and leave the door open to further hikes in upcoming meetings, said Kallum Pickering, senior economist at Berenberg Bank. Though the US Federal Reserve and the European Central Bank raised rates last week, they are thought

European Central Bank hikes interest rates for 9th time to combat inflation

The European Central Bank raised interest rates for the ninth straight time in its yearlong campaign to stamp out painfully high inflation, even as worries about recession fuel speculation that Thursday's hike could be its last. ECB President Christine Lagarde had all but promised the quarter-percentage point increase. That puts the focus at her post-meeting news conference on whether the bank will raise rates again at its September meeting or hold off after a record series of rate hikes. Central banks around the world have been raising borrowing costs to combat inflation unleashed by higher energy prices after Russia invaded Ukraine and supply chain backups as the global economy recovered from the coronavirus pandemic. Now, the question is whether the rapid rate hikes are reaching their end. The ECB move followed a decision by the US Federal Reserve on Wednesday to raise its key rate for the 11th time in 17 months.
