H-1B visas not related to immigration, they fill skills gap: Nasscom

Nasscom on Wednesday said H-1B visas have nothing to do with immigration issues and instead fill critical skills gap in the US, as the apex industry body asserted that technology will be the "lynchpin" of US economic growth, triggering continued need for "win-win partnerships" between companies on both sides. Nasscom vice president Shivendra Singh slammed "myth" that H-1B workers are cheap labour, replace American workers, or depress US salaries, and sought to assuage concerns around any adverse impact of President Donald Trump's latest moves and orders on flow of Indian tech professionals to the US. Singh told PTI that Nasscom does not have any reason to be less optimistic around Indian IT industry's growth story, given that India and Indian talent have very important role in growth of US economy. He expressed optimism that the developments in the US would not cloud the outlook for the Indian IT industry. Nasscom's comments assume significance given the growing unease around Trump'

India 2nd largest market for US in terms of tourist arrivals: Brand USA CEO

India is the second largest overseas market for the US in terms of tourist arrivals and the healthy growth in Indians visiting America is expected to continue in 2025, Brand USA CEO Fred Dixon has said. India is one of the fastest growing markets in the world for US tourism and 2.2 million Indians travelled to America in 2024, which is a 24 per cent growth over the previous years. It's almost a 50 per cent growth since 2019, he told PTI. Asked about the share of Indian tourists among all tourists who visited the US, he said India has climbed each year in terms of its importance to the US in ranking. "In 2024, India has moved to the second largest overseas market. Just behind the UK and just ahead of Germany," said Dixon, who was in Hyderabad for an India sales mission. Given the rapid growth in the last two years, Indians visiting the US is expected to continue in 2025, he said. A record number of visitor visas were issued to Indians last year and five million Indians today hold v

At the conclusion of the meeting that lasted for about an hour, the ministers reconfirmed the Quad Leadership Summit in India later this year. We also strongly oppose any unilateral actions that seek to change the status quo by force or coercion," a joint statement issued by the Quad countrie

India should reciprocate if US imposes duties on domestic goods: Experts

India should respond with equal measures if the newly elected US President Donald Trump would impose higher tariffs on domestic goods, trade experts say. They noted that India has previously implemented retaliatory customs duties on several US products, such as apples, in response to what it deemed "illegal" tariffs imposed by America on certain steel and aluminium products. In December last year, Trump has said India charges "a lot" of tariffs, reiterating his intention to impose reciprocal tariffs in retaliation for what New Delhi will impose on the import of certain American products. "India should respond firmly and in equal measures," economic think tank Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI) Founder Ajay Srivastava said. In 2018, when the US taxed Indian steel and aluminium, India retaliated by raising tariffs on 29 US products, recovering equivalent revenue. "This measured response showed India's capability to protect its trade interests while staying balanced," Srivastava

US, India may see stronger ties during Trump's 2nd term: FIIDS founder

There is a possibility of stronger alignment between India and the United States during Donald Trump's second term, which could enhance diplomatic efforts on pressing global issues, such as the Russia-Ukraine crisis, according to the founder of a prominent advocacy group focused on the Indian diaspora. President-elect Trump will return to the White House as US President on Monday. Trump 2.0 administration is going to be much more mature and additionally different from the Biden administration, Khanderao Kand, founder and director of Foundation for India and Indian Diaspora Studies (FIIDS) told PTI in an interview. We would see a much more mature ongoing policy alignment in the area of South Asia and also the Indo-Pacific," he said. India-US ties need shared values, not only be transactional: Richard Verma

Richard Verma, the highest-ranking Indian-American official in the State Department, has expressed optimism about the future of US-India ties and emphasised the need to base the relationship on shared values rather than mere transactional dealings. Verma, Deputy Secretary of State for Management and Resources, said he is not worried about the differences between the US and India as they make the relationship more dynamic. "What I don't want this to become, though, is a transactional relationship where we're just looking to sell things or you're looking to have us buy things, Verma told PTI in an interview on Friday, as he prepares to leave office. "That is not a deep, consequential relationship built on values. I think staying true to those principles is really...important, said Verma, who previously served as America's Ambassador to India, making him the first Indian American in that position. President Joe Biden will cede power to President-elect Donald Trump on Monday, marking .
