US approves extradition of 26/11 attack accused Tahawwur Rana to India

A US court has consented to the Indian request, through the US Government, for the extradition of Pakistani-origin Canadian businessman Tahawwur Rana to India where he is sought for his involvement in the 2008 Mumbai terror attack. On June 10, 2020, India filed a complaint seeking the provisional arrest of 62-year-old Rana with a view towards extradition. The Biden Administration had supported and approved the extradition of Rana to India. "The Court has reviewed and considered all of the documents submitted in support of and in opposition to the Request, and has considered the arguments presented at the hearing, Judge Jacqueline Chooljian, US Magistrate Judge of the US District Court Central District of California, said in a 48-page court order dated May 16, which was released Wednesday. "Based on such review and consideration and for the reasons discussed herein, the Court makes the findings set forth below, and CERTIFIES to the Secretary of State of the United States the ...

Russian conduct unchanged with Western warships in east Med: US commander

A U.S. Navy commander said Wednesday there is no significant change in the conduct of Russian aircraft and warships toward Western naval and air assets in the eastern Mediterranean as Moscow's war in Ukraine grinds on. Cmdr. Peter C. Flynn said that Russian warplanes and naval vessels have been conducting themselves professionally, like other military forces in the region, and there's been no indication of any heightened aggression or hostility. We obviously study what is going on in theater and you know that certainly plays a role in what we do and what we prepare for, but not a significant change in the attitude of Russian forces, Flynn told The Associated Press aboard the USS Arleigh Burke. The destroyer, one of the United States' most capable warships, is docked at Cyprus' main Limassol port. Russia has a naval base in Tartus, Syria, the only such facility that Moscow has outside the former Soviet Union. In 2017, Moscow struck a deal with Syrian President Bashar Assad to extend

California State Senate passes brings law banning caste discrimination

In a historic move, the California State Senate on Thursday passed a legislation that would ban caste-based discrimination in the State. Passed by 34-1 vote, the bill SB 403, would make California the first US state to add caste as a protected category in its anti-discrimination laws. Promoters of the bill, being led by non-profit Equality Lab, said that a similar bill is being introduced in the State House of Representatives, before it can be sent to the Governor to be signed into a law. Introduced by California Senator Aisha Wahab, SB 403 adds caste as a protected category to an existing law, the Unruh Civil Rights Act, which provides that all people in the state of California are entitled to the full and equal accommodations, advantages, facilities, privileges, or services in all business establishments. SB 403 provides explicit protections to those who have been systemically harmed due to caste bias and prejudice. It also provides firm legal consequences for those seeking to ..

G7 Finance Ministers to meet in Japan to tackle threat from US debt ceiling

The financial leaders of the Group of Seven wealthy nations will meet in Japan beginning on Thursday as a standoff over the US debt ceiling looms as one of the biggest potential threats to the global economy. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said one of her priorities in Niigata, a port city on the Japan Sea coast, would be to emphasise the importance of resolving the standoff over the national debt. I will underscore the importance of Congress acting to resolve the debt limit to maintain America's economic leadership and protect the global economy, Yellen said in a tweet Thursday. Yellen also is bound to be seeking to reassure her counterparts over recent bank failures that have raised worries over risks for the global financial system. The finance ministers and central bank governors are meeting for three days ahead of a G-7 summit later this month in Hiroshima. President Joe Biden said on Wednesday that he and congressional leaders had a productive meeting Tuesday on trying to r
