Those who give pain can't give medicine: Akhilesh's dig at Keshav Maurya

In an apparent attack on Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya over his remarks on the Allahabad High Court's order on assistant teachers' recruitment, Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav on Sunday said that those who give pain shouldn't claim to give medicine. In a post on X in Hindi, the SP chief said the "favoured deputy chief minister" was part of the government which snatched reservation from the youth and when they got justice after a long fight, he came forward to show himself as sympathetic. The Allahabad High Court has directed the Uttar Pradesh government to prepare a fresh selection list for the appointment of 69,000 assistant teachers within three months, setting aside the lists issued in June 2020 and January 2022 which included 6,800 candidates. The bench also revised the earlier order and said the reserved category candidates who qualify for the general category merit list should be migrated to that category. In addition, the benefit of vertical reservation

BJP hopes to win all bypoll seats in UP, political experts say not easy

Following a setback in the Lok Sabha elections, the BJP has vowed to win all 10 assembly seats, where by-elections are to be held, underlining its dominance in the state and sending a message to the Opposition that its recent resurgence was short-lived. Political observers, however, say it could be an uphill task for the ruling NDA alliance. Bypolls are to be held on 10 seats that fell vacant after nine MLAs were elected as MPs in this year's Lok Sabha elections and the MLA of Sishamau was convicted and given a seven-year jail sentence. However, the dates for the polls have not been announced yet. "Let us all pledge that we will achieve 100 per cent victory in the upcoming by-elections on 10 assembly seats," BJP's UP unit president Bhupendra Singh Chaudhary exhorted party workers at the party's state working committee meeting held on July 14. Since then the BJP organisation has been making extensive preparations for all 10 seats, including at the booth level, with ministers and par

Brick kiln workers in western UP begin transition to solar energy

Smoke swirls from brick kiln chimneys rise up lazily, clouding around sleek solar panels that reflect the monsoon skies above, the ancient and the very new melding easily across the flat lands of western Uttar Pradesh where solar energy is changing lives in ways big and small. The harsh summer of endless days of the sun beating down mercilessly has given way to rain and sullen clouds. But the stored solar energy in the panels continues to do its work, bringing down pollution in the traditional brick kiln industry and providing electricity, and digital connectivity, to villages in the area. Eight brick kilns in Aligarh district's Kodiaganj, Pilakhana and Akrabad have already made the pioneering shift from coal to solar panels to meet their electricity needs. It's a fraction of the district's 555 brick kilns according to a report by the UP Pollution Control Board but at least a beginning. Om Prakash Sharma, who owns a brick kiln, said the initial costs were steep at Rs 7 lakh but

HC refuses to quash proceedings against six for disrespecting national flag

The Allahabad High Court has refused to quash criminal proceedings against six people accused of carrying a tricolour with Quranic verses during a religious procession, saying such incidents could be exploited by those who seek to create communal discord. Dismissing the petition filed by Gulamuddin and five others, Justice Vinod Diwakar said the act was punishable under the Flag Code of India, 2002, and there was a violation of the Prevention of Insults of National Honour Act, 1971. Stressing that the tricolour symbolises unity and diversity of the nation, transcending religious, ethnic and cultural differences, the court observed, "It is a unifying emblem representing the collective identity and sovereignty of India. Act of disrespect towards the 'tiranga' can have far-reaching social cultural implications, particularly in a diverse society like India." Such incidents could be exploited by those who seek to create communal discord or fuel misunderstandings between different ...

Court should take note of assault on shanty-dwellers in Ghaziabad: Akhilesh

Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav has urged the court to take cognisance of the assault on a group of people in Uttar Pradesh's Ghaziabad by members of a Hindu right-wing outfit, and asked if this was a new way to "vacate" land. Members of the outfit assaulted the group of people living near a railway station in Ghaziabad and destroyed their shanties, claiming they were Bangladeshi infiltrators. Bhupendra Chowdhary, the president of the Hindu Raksha Dal, and Badal alias Hariom Singh were arrested in connection with the case late Saturday. In a post on X on Saturday night, Yadav said, "Even the government does not have the right to take the law into its own hands, then how can its associates and henchmen have the right to do so. The honourable court is requested to take suo motu cognisance of this violent matter." He said this is not arbitrary violence. "Is this also a game of the 'Bharatiya Jameen Party', which is devising this unique way to vacate the land?" Yadav said targetin
