The Uttar Pradesh government has signed an agreement with a private firm for arranging around 5,000 special accommodations during the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj in 2025, officials said on Saturday. The accommodations would include homestays, bed and breakfast establishments, and paying guest units across major towns and prominent locations throughout the state, they said. The Directorate of Tourism entered into a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Luzern Ventures Private Limited (OGA) on Friday, they said. The Supreme Court has pulled up the Uttar Pradesh government over the killing of former Lok Sabha member Atiq Ahmad and his brother Ashraf in police custody in Prayagraj on April 15, observing "someone is complicit". It has also sought a status report from the state government on 183 "police encounters" that have taken place since 2017. According to the state police, 183 people have been killed in numerous police encounters since the Yogi Adityanath government assumed office in March 2017. Yogi's detractors have often claimed many of them were staged. The Allahabad High Court has admitted mafia-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari's appeal against life term awarded to him by the Varanasi sessions court in the 1991 Awadhesh Rai murder case. A division bench comprising Justice K J Thaker and Justice U C Sharma summoned the lower court record and fixed September 13 as the next date of hearing. In the court proceedings on last Thursday, Mukhtar Ansari's counsel Upendra Upadhya had pleaded on his behalf but the state counsel opposed his appeal. Ansari was on June 5 awarded life imprisonment by the court of special judge (MP-MLA) for the murder of Awadhesh Rai in Varanasi in 1991. The court also slapped a penalty of Rs 1.20 lakh on him. This was Ansari's fifth conviction since September 21, 2022, and the biggest so far in terms of quantum of the sentence. Mukhtar had appeared before the court from the Banda jail through video-conferencing.

Cane dues of Rs 5,664 crore has been pending for payments to farmers on various sugar mills in the state for the 2022-23 crushing season, the Uttar Pradesh government said on Wednesday. "As per information till Jul 24, cane dues of Rs 5,664 of farmers are pending for payments," Cane Development Minister Lakshmi Narain Chaudhary said in a written reply in the state assembly on a question of member Ajay Kumar. He said that rules and regulations are in place to ensure payment of farmers and action is taken accordingly. He said for the pending dues, notices have been issued to sugar mills on April 21, May 19 and Jun 22 this year.
The Uttar Pradesh government's power department installed more than 11 lakh smart meters since the project began in 2018, Energy Minister AK Sharma said in the assembly on Wednesday. The data shared by the minister was updated till March 20. "From the start of the installation work till March 20, 2023, 11.79 lakh smart meters were installed in the state. In this period, 72,846 complaints were received regarding the meters. Of these complaints, 56,681 were found true after which the meters were changed," he said in reply to a question by Samajwadi Party member Atul Pradhan. "Of the total 56,681 meters that were changed, 52,250 were out of order while 4,431 were changed due to other technical reasons," he added. On a query that the meters were generating higher electricity bills, the minister said it is not the case. "The bills are generated on the basis of exact power consumption," the minister said. The Gyanvapi management committee has filed a plea in a court here seeking a ban on the media coverage of the survey to determine whether the 17th-century mosque was constructed over a pre-existing structure of a Hindu temple. The matter is expected to be heard later in the day. In July, a Varanasi court had directed the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) to conduct the scientific survey of the Gyanvapi mosque located next to the Kashi Vishwanath temple here. This was upheld by the Allahabad Hight Court and later by the Supreme Court. The survey of the mosque complex began on August 4 following court orders. The project is supported by Nirbhaya fund of the Centre and aims at resolving the critical issue of safety in buses and enhancing the overall travel experience of passengers in UPSRTC buses through advanced technologies, such as live tracking of buses. More than 13,000 cybercrime cases were registered in Uttar Pradesh from 2022 to March 20, 2023, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, who also holds the home portfolio, informed the state assembly on Tuesday. SP MLA from Sardhana Atul Pradhan had sought the information in a starred question and asked about the measures taken by the government to check the "increasing" cybercrime in the state. "From the year 2022 till 20.03.2023, 13,155 cases of cybercrime were registered. Out of the total number of 27,390 complaint applications, 21,623 cases have been disposed of and the remaining applications are being disposed of," Adityanath said in a written reply.
