Automobile retail sales in India rose 7 per cent year-on-year in January at 22,91,621 units, driven by robust demand across segments, dealer's body FADA said on Thursday. Overall retail sales stood at 21,49,117 units in January 2024. "Our observations indicate that each vehicle category --2W, 3W, PV, tractor and CV-- witnessed positive momentum, pointing toward sustained consumer confidence and steady market recovery," the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) President C S Vigneshwar said in a statement. Passenger vehicle retail sales jumped 16 per cent year-on-year to 4,65,920 units last month. Many dealers noted improved demand but also pointed to last year's heavy discounting, which helped clear older models and shift registrations, Vigneshwar said. General Motors has said it will retreat from the robotaxi business and stop funding its money-losing Cruise autonomous vehicle unit. Instead the Detroit automaker will focus on development of partially automated driver-assist systems like its Super Cruise, which allows drivers to take their hands off the steering wheel. GM on Tuesday said it would get out of robotaxis given the considerable time and resources that would be needed to scale the business, along with an increasingly competitive robotaxi market. The company said it will combine Cruise's technical team with its own to work on advanced systems to assist drivers. GM bought Cruise automation in 2016 for at least USD1 billion with high hopes of developing a profitable fleet of robotaxis. Over the years GM invested billions in the subsidiary and eventually bought 90 per cent of the company from investors. GM even announced plans for Cruise to generate USD1 billion in annual revenue by 2025, but it scaled back spending on t
More than two crore vehicles registered in Maharashtra before April 2019 will have to be fitted with High Security Registration Plates (HSRP) in the next four months to avoid imposition of penalty on their owners. The Maharashtra Transport Commissioner's Office has set March 31, 2025 deadline for installation of the HSRPs to the vehicles and appointed three agencies, after a long-drawn-out tendering process, to carry out the task. The authorities issued the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for the new registration plates on Wednesday, a day before the new Maharashtra government led by Devendra Fadnavis was sworn in. To curb vehicle thefts and bring uniformity in vehicle's identity marks, the fitment of these number plates was made mandatory for the vehicles registered in Maharashtra before April 2019, and the onus of installing those was on the manufacturers. Made of a rare aluminum alloy, HSRP contains a retro-reflective film with a verification inscription 'India', a ...
In a relief for commercial vehicle drivers, the Supreme Court on Wednesday held that a person holding a driving licence for a light motor vehicle (LMV) is also entitled to drive a transport vehicle with an unladen weight not exceeding 7,500 kg. The judgement of a five-judge Constitution bench headed by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud is a jolt to insurance companies which had been rejecting claims if accidents involved transport vehicles of a particular weight and if the drivers were not authorised to drive them as per legal stipulation. There is no empirical data that LMV driving licence holders are responsible for rise in road accidents in the country, Justice Hrishikesh Roy, who wrote the unanimous verdict for the bench, said. He said the LMV driving licence holders, who spent maximum time behind the wheels, are seeking an answer from the court and their grievances cannot be rejected on technical grounds. Besides the CJI and Justice Roy, the bench also comprised Justices P S ...
