Board approves issue of debentures
Loss-making telecom operator Vodafone Idea board on Friday approved a proposal to raise up to Rs 1,600 crore from mobile tower company ATC Telecom Infrastructure, the company said in a regulatory filing. "The Board of Directors of Vodafone Idea Limited at its meeting held today - October 21, 2022 - has, inter-alia, approved issuance of up to 16,000 Indian Rupee denominated optionally convertible, unsecured, unrated and unlisted debentures having a face value of Rs 10,00,000 each, in one or more tranches, aggregating up to Rs 1,600 crores, convertible into equity shares at a conversion price of Rs 10 per equity share, to ATC Telecom Infrastructure Private Limited," VIL said. The optionally convertible, unlisted, unsecured and unrated debentures (OCDs) will carry a coupon rate of 11.2 per cent per annum, payable semi-annually during its term. "Maximum OCD term of eighteen (18) months from the date of issue and allotment of the first tranche of OCDs," the filing said.

Telecom major Jio topped the 4G network speed chart in terms of average download and upload for the first time in about six years of its commercial operation, according to data published by sector regulator Trai. While Jio's 4G upload speed marginally improved to 6.4 megabit per second, the speed on Vodafone Idea (Vi) network dropped to 5.9 mbps in September from 6.7 mbps in August. Vi was leading the chart for the last several quarters in the uploading speed segment. The average speed is computed by Telecom Regulatory Authority of India based on the data it collects across India with the help of its MySpeed application on a real-time basis. Airtel and BSNL networks registered a 3.4 mbps upload speed in September. Jio continued to maintain its leadership in the 4G download chart. In September, the telecom major recorded an average download speed of 19.1 mbps. It was followed by Airtel, which recorded a download speed of 14 mbps, followed by Vi at 12.7 mbps and BSNL at 5 mbps.

Smartphone maker Realme has partnered with telecom operators Airtel, Jio and Vodafone Idea to come up with a bundled offer for 5G handsets, the company said after the launch of 5G services at the Indian Mobile Congress. Realme launched India's first 5G smartphone in India in 2020 and since then, it has added 23 5G smartphones to its portfolio. "As the first brand to launch a 5G-enabled phone, we believe that 5G has the potential to bring together the entire ecosystem, which is why Realme has dedicated 90 per cent of its research and development efforts to 5G technologies and devices. Vodafone Idea, the country's struggling third telecom player, plans to begin the journey to roll out 5G services, matching rivals Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel, but the firm has offered no specific timeline for the launch or coverage of the ultra high-speed internet services. Vodafone Idea and state-owned Energy Efficiency Services Limited will install 33.3 lakh additional smart meters in Uttar Pradesh and Haryana, the two companies said in a statement. Vodafone Idea Limited (VI) and Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) under a partnership have already installed 16.7 smart meters in these two states, the statement said Monday. "VI partners with EESL for advanced metering infrastructure project for DISCOMS in Uttar Pradesh and Haryana. 16.7 lakhs Vi IoT enabled smart meters installed at present in the two states. In total, 50 lakhs Vi IoT-enabled smart meters to be installed under the agreement," it said.
