Justice delayed but not denied in anti-Sikh riots case: Omar

Former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah said Monday that justice to victims of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots was delayed but not denied. "Justice delayed but not denied. #84riots," Abdullah tweeted after the Delhi High Court convicted six persons, including Congress leader Sajjan Kumar, in an anti-Sikh riots case. The riots, in which thousands of Sikhs were killed, broke out after the assassination of prime minister Indira Gandhi by her Sikh bodyguards on October 31, 1984. The conviction of five others -- former Congress councillor Balwan Khokhar, retired naval officer Captain Bhagmal, Girdhari Lal, former MLAs Mahender Yadav and Kishan Khokhar-- were also upheld by the high court. Thousands protest 'slave law' in Budapest

Protesters threw smoke grenades at police who responded with tear gas in Budapest on Sunday as thousands of people rallied against a new "slave law" passed by the government of conservative Prime Minister Viktor Orban. More than 15,000 people, according to local press reports, joined the demonstration -- the first rally since Orban returned to power in 2010 to bring together all opposition parties, from greens to the far right, under the same banner. The protest was called by unions and opposition parties outraged at reforms that hike the annual overtime hours that employers can demand from 250 to 400 hours and allows payment to be delayed by up to three years. The government says the changes are needed by employers short of manpower and will benefit those wanting to work extra hours. Sunday's protest ended up at Parliament Square, where protesters chanting "Orban get lost!" have been gathering since the law was adopted on Wednesday. Protesters led by two opposition lawmakers later ...

Trial of Pole charged for links to Papuan separatists begins

A Polish man who faces a 15-year prison sentence if convicted for alleged links to Papuan separatists is scheduled to appear in court Monday for the start of his trial, an Indonesian official said. Jakub Fabian Skrzypski was detained and charged in August for intending to film an arms deal between rebels in Indonesia's restive province of Papua, a prosecutor said. The trial will be held in Wamena where Skrzypski was arrested, the town's prosecutor Ricarda Arsenius said. "The indictment will be read out on Monday", Arsenius told AFP, adding that Skrzypski is in good health. Police said they had confiscated from Skrzypski and three Indonesians more than 130 rounds of ammunition and documents detailing the struggle of the Free Papua Movement. Skrzypski's lawyer Latifah Anum Siregar said the Pole, who was living in Switzerland before his arrest, denied any wrongdoing. "We'll see what the prosecutors' indictment is. We are ready to submit evidence to refute the charges," Latifah Anum ...

Russia retains heightened military border presence: Ukraine leader

Russia retains a heightened military presence on Ukraine's border, having pulled back "less than 10 percent" of its forces since tensions between the countries peaked in November, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said. "The biggest part (of troops) is still there, less than 10 per cent have been withdrawn," Poroshenko told a press conference. After a maritime conflict with Moscow in the Black Sea in late November, Poroshenko accused Russia of having sharply raised its military presence on the border, with Ukraine warning of the threat of "full-scale war." In response, Kiev imposed martial law for 30 days in 10 regions that border Russia, the latest page of the unprecedented crisis in relations between the two neighbours. "The threat of an invasion of Russian armed forces on Ukrainian territory still exists and we must be prepared for it," Poroshenko said, adding he sees no reason for the snap lifting of martial law. On November 25, Russia seized three Ukrainian navy vessels and ...

Air strikes, clashes hit Yemen port city despite ceasefire

The UN's envoy to Yemen called on Sunday for pro-government forces and rebels to respect a ceasefire in the Red Sea port city of Hodeida, after repeated clashes between the two sides threatened to unravel a hard-won accord hammered out in Sweden last week. "The special envoy expects the two parties to respect their obligations as per the text and spirit of the Stockholm Agreement and to engage in the immediate implementation of its provisions," envoy Martin Griffiths tweeted. He said the UN was working with Yemen's Saudi-backed government and Iran-aligned Huthi rebels to ensure the accord on Hodeida reached on Thursday was "implemented timely and properly". Clashes shook Hodeida Sunday after air strikes and deadly fighting on the outskirts overnight, residents said. UN chief Antonio Guterres warned that "much worse" lay in store for the impoverished country in 2019 unless its warring parties strike a peace deal and head off a humanitarian crisis. The two sides exchanged accusations of

48 young officers commissioned into CRPF

Forty-eight officers, including four women, were Sunday commissioned into the country's largest paramilitary force CRPF after a passing-out parade reviewed by Vice President Venkaiah Naidu here. Naidu told the 50th batch of the Directly Appointed Gazetted Officers (DAGOs), to be appointed as Assistant Commandants in the paramilitary, to lead by example and be concerned about the issues and grievances of the troops under their command. He also asked the top brass of the over 3-lakh strong Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) to seriously think about ways to enhance avenues of promotion for the personnel and fill existing vacancies. Naidu said it was a "concern" that many officers and jawans of the force sought voluntary retirement or had resigned from the service over the last few years. The vice president, after the passing-out parade held at the CRPF officers academy in Kadarpur village area here, awarded the best performing trainee officers and wished them success in their future ...

Remove or keep a statue? South Africa debates painful legacy

A hulking statue of a late 19th century white leader, with a cane and top hat, has been a flashpoint for cultural conflict in South Africa for years. Black protesters threw paint on it. White supporters rallied around it. Authorities surrounded the statue with barbed wire and then ringed it with a more permanent fence. Nearly 25 years after the end of white minority rule, the statue of Paul Kruger still looms in Church Square in the centre of Pretoria, South Africa's capital. The tussle over its fate goes to the heart of a discussion over whether relics of white domination should be scrapped or kept as reminders of a harsh past. It is also a test of Nelson Mandela's dictum that the black majority's former oppressors should be embraced, not punished an approach viewed as too generous by some South Africans. The arguments echo similar ones in the United States, where some monuments to the US Civil War-era Confederacy have been removed after protests and vandalism. "The removal of a ...

Air strikes, clashes hit Yemen's Hodeida despite ceasefire

Air strikes and fierce clashes shook the outskirts of Yemen's rebel-held port city of Hodeida overnight, pro-government sources and residents said Sunday, despite a UN-brokered ceasefire. At least 29 fighters, including 22 Huthi rebels, were killed on Saturday night in clashes and air strikes in Hodeida province, a pro-government military source told AFP. He added that seven rebels were captured during an attack on Al-Durayhimi district, which lies about 20 kilometres south of Hodeida city. A resident of the city reached by telephone said that the clashes were "fierce" and the sounds of jets could be heard throughout the night until about 5 am (0200 GMT) on Sunday. The fighting comes days after a UN-backed ceasefire came into effect, part of a hard-won accord agreed in Sweden between Yemen's warring sides. The truce between Yemeni government forces, backed by a Saudi-led military coalition, and the Huthi rebels was due to be followed by the withdrawal within days of fighters on both ..
