A gang of dacoits have looted ornaments estimated to be valued at Rs 1 crore from the Sri Rani Sati Dadi Mandir here in Jamtara district, police said on Monday. Around eight armed dacoits confined the temple priest on Sunday night and took away ornaments including gold chains, silver umbrellas, silver padukas, ear rings, nose rings, and gold bangles studded with diamond. The dacoits, who have hidden some silver ornaments in mud under a road bridge, was recovered, police said adding that a hunt was launched to apprehend the culprits.

A fourth US soldier has died as a result of a roadside bomb attack in Afghanistan last week, the Pentagon said Monday. Sergeant Jason Mitchell McClary, 24, from Pennsylvania, died on Sunday, after being treated in a US military hospital in Germany, the Pentagon said in a statement. His death takes the number of American military personnel to have been killed in Afghanistan this year to 13. The November 27 attack saw an improvised explosive device (IED) detonated near Ghazni city in central Afghanistan. Wounded Yemeni rebels were flown out of Sanaa on a UN charter flight Monday for medical treatment in Oman, an airport source told AFP, a critical step towards planned peace talks. A military court in the Hamas-run Gaza Strip on Monday sentenced six people, including a woman, to death for "collaborating" with Israel, authorities said. In total 14 people were sentenced for "collaborating with the occupation," with five sentenced to be hanged and one shot, the interior ministry in Gaza said. Clashes between the army and rebels loyal to a renegade former general in eastern DR Congo have killed at least 18 people, military sources said Monday. The University Grants Commission (UGC) has directed varsities across the country to observe December 7 as the Armed Forces Flag Day to commemorate the "supreme sacrifices" made by the country's soldiers during conflicts. In a letter sent to the heads of such institutions, the commission asked them to acknowledge the "supreme sacrifices made by our valiant Armed Forces personnel for protecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of our country and securing our lives against the threats of insurgency and terrorism" and against natural calamities. The commission also directed the varsities to organise functions or hold talks in the colleges or institutes to generate awareness on the issue among the students. The Indian Armed Forces Flag Day is observed every year on December 7 since 1949 to honour the soldiers, airmen and sailors of the country.
