Seven suspected Qaeda fighters killed in Yemen drone strike

Seven suspected Al-Qaeda fighters were killed today when a drone targeted their car in the southern Yemeni province of Shabwa, a security official said. The car was hit as it drove along a side road in Shabwa's Bihan district, the official, from forces loyal to President Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi's internationally recognised government, told AFP. The US military is the only force known to operate armed drones over Yemen. The security official said the militants were members of Al-Qaeda, and said the aircraft that carried out the strike was American. The United States considers the Yemen-based Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula to be the radical group's most dangerous branch. A long-running drone war against AQAP has intensified since US President Donald Trump took office in January 2017. AQAP has flourished in the chaos of the country's civil war, which pits the Saudi-backed government against Shiite Huthi rebels.

Turkey police detain two Britons over 'terror propaganda': report

Anti-terror police have detained two Britons of Iraqi origin at an airport in southwest Turkey on charges of spreading terror propaganda for outlawed Kurdish militants, media reported today. Two brothers identified as Ayman Barzan and Hariam Barzan were held yesterday at Dalaman airport after they were interviewed by anti-terror risk analysis police over their "suspicious behaviours", the DHA private news agency reported. Police later checked their social media accounts where they allegedly disseminated propaganda in favour of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) and the Syrian Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG) militia, DHA said. Turkey considers the YPG as the Syrian branch of the PKK -- which has waged a bloody insurgency against the state since 1984 and is blacklisted as a terror group by Ankara and its Western allies. The two brothers, who were detained by police, were later placed by a local court in pre-trial detention, DHA said.

Israel court gives brief reprieve to threatened Bedouin village: Lawyer

Israel's Supreme Court has temporarily blocked the demolition of a Palestinian Bedouin village in the occupied West Bank, a lawyer for residents said today, following growing international concerns over the move. The temporary injunction issued yesterday night stops the Israeli authorities razing Khan al-Ahmar until at least July 11 to give the state time to respond, attorney Shlomo Lecker told AFP. It follows a new petition by residents who submitted a planning application to rebuild the village at its present location. There has been strong international pressure on Israel to reverse its plans to raze Khan al-Ahmar, which the Israeli authorities say was built illegally. In May the Supreme Court rejected a final appeal against its demolition. Activists say the villagers had little alternative but to build without Israeli construction permits that are almost never issued to Palestinians in the parts of the West Bank where Israel has full control over civilian affairs. Israeli rights ..

Turkey has accused Gulen of ordering the attempted overthrow of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on July 15, 2016 -- a charge he strongly denies. The raids were spread across 47 provinces, including the western province of Izmir, where prosecutors issued 75 warrants as part of an investigation into a Gulen "cell inside the armed forces", the agency added. Over 77,000 people including military personnel have been arrested over alleged Gulen links under the post-coup state of emergency imposed nearly two years ago. Ankara's Western allies including the European Union have .

Three dead in Nicaragua clashes as US slaps sanctions on government

Three people were killed in fresh clashes in Nicaragua today as the US sanctioned the Central American country's police chief and two other top officials over rights abuses and corruption. The deaths occurred in renewed violence in the country's northwest, where security forces loyal to President Daniel Ortega fought with anti-government activists in a bid to quash the popular uprising against the embattled leader. More than 220 people have been killed in the ongoing unrest since mid-April. Earlier, around 20 truckloads of riot police and paramilitaries moved into the indigenous Sutiaba area of Leon to clear roads blocked by barricades. UN calls for 'all parties' to find Yemen political solution

The UN Security Council said today that "all parties" should work toward a political solution for Yemen, and repeated a call for the key port of Hodeida to remain open. The statements came after UN envoy Martin Griffiths updated the Security Council via a video link from the region. Members "reaffirmed their unequivocal support for the efforts of the special envoy, and encouraged all parties to engage constructively with his efforts to progress a political solution," the Security Council said in a statement. They also "reaffirmed that a political solution remains the only way to end the conflict," the statement added. The Security Council said it recognized the importance of the ports of Hodeida and Saleef, and reiterated a call for these to be kept open. Rebel-held Hodeida, whose port operations could eventually be overseen by the UN, has recently been the target of a government offensive backed by a Saudi-led Arab coalition that includes the United Arab Emirates.
