12 injured in grenade attack in Shopian

At least a dozen people, including three policemen, were injured in a grenade attack in a busy market area in Jammu and Kashmir's Shopian district, police said. Militants hurled a grenade on security forces in Shopian town, resulting in injuries to at least nine civilians and three cops, a police official said. Israel to deduct from Palestinian funds for arson damages

Israel says it plans to deduct from tax funds it collects for the Palestinians the amount needed to compensate Israelis living near the Gaza Strip who have come under a wave of arson attacks. Israel has been battling fires caused by kites rigged with incendiary devices launched by Palestinians in Gaza that have damaged forests and torched agricultural fields. The fires have disrupted daily life in communities near the Gaza Strip. The kites have been flown by Gazans who have staged weekly protests since late March during which more than 115 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli army fire. The statement from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office on Sunday didn't disclose how much would be deducted. Israeli Army Radio put the cost of damages at 5 million shekels ($1.4 million).

Afghanistan's top religious council bans suicide attacks

Afghanistan's top religious body has issued a ruling, or a fatwa, declaring suicide attacks "haram" forbidden under Islamic law. The Afghan Ulema Council, which includes Muslim clerics, scholars and men of authority in religion and law from across the country, issued the fatwa at a gathering on Monday in Kabul that hosted around 2,000 council members. The council appealed on both the Afghan government forces and the Taliban and other militants to halt the fighting and agree on a cease-fire. It also called for peace negotiations between the two sides. It's the first time the council has issued such an appeal. Ghofranullah Murad, a member of the council, read out a written statement from the gathering that said innocent Afghan men, women and children are the victims of war.

One killed, many injured in clash in CoochBehar

One person was killed and a number of people were injured in a clash between supporters of two political parties in CoochBehar district, police said today. The clash between the supporters of the two parties took place at Jamaldaha area of the district yesterday in which Ramjan Mian was killed and many people were injured, they said. The police, however, did not specify the number of injured persons. A large contingent of police force was deployed in the area to maintain peace, they added. CoochBehar district CPI(M) leaders claimed that deceased Ramjan Mian was their active supporter and their newly elected gram panchayat member of Jamaldaha, Atabul Islamd was among the injured. The CPI(M) leaders alleged that the clash started when Trinamool Congress workers tried to set the house of Islam on fire which was resisted by CPI(M) activists. The Trinamool Congress has denied the CPI(M) allegations.

Criminal killed in encounter in Muzaffarnagar

A wanted criminal was killed and a police personnel injured during an encounter near Falawda village here today, police said. The encounter took place this morning in an area under the Purkazi police station, Superintendent of Police (SP), City, Ombir Singh said. Ramesh alias Nanu was killed in the the encounter. He was carrying a reward of Rs 50,000, the officer said. Station House Officer (SHO) Vijay Singh was injured in the incident, the SP said. The police have seized a motorcycle and a pistol. Ramesh was wanted in more than a dozen cases of loot and murder in Muzaffarnagar and Saharanpur districts, the officer said.

Two killed as activists clash with militants in Pakistan tribal area

A clash between Pashtun activists and local militants today killed two people and wounded 25 others in a restive Pakistani tribal region near the Afghan border, officials said. The incident occurred in the Rustam Bazar of Wana, the main town of South Waziristan where the military has in the past conducted a string of punishing offensives to hunt down Taliban and Al-Qaeda-linked militants. Supporters of the Pashtun Protection Movement (PTM), which is led by young activist Manzoor Pashteen, wanted to hold a rally to protest against growing corruption in the tribal regions. "The clash erupted after supporters of Manzoor Pashteen were stopped from holding a protest rally by local militants belonging to Maulvi Nazir group " a senior local administration official told AFP on condition of anonymity. Six dead after militants attack Pakistan border posts

Six militants have been killed after a thwarted attack on Pakistan army posts along the country's border with Afghanistan, the military said today. Five soldiers were injured in two separate attacks in Balochistan, a restive province in Pakistan's south, and the tribal district of Bajaur in the country's far north. "Security forces responded effectively and repulsed attacks, killing six terrorists," the military said in a statement, adding that four troops from the paramilitary Frontier Corps and an Air Force soldier had been injured. The attacks targeted soldiers working to erect a fence along the length of Pakistan's 2400-kilometre (1490-mile) border with Afghanistan, across which Pakistan alleges militants sneak into the country from its western neighbour. Islamabad accuses Afghanistan of allowing militants hiding across the border to launch attacks on Pakistani military targets. Several Islamist militant groups are active in Balochistan, including the Taliban and local affiliates .

Chhattisgarh: Arms, ammunition recovered from Naxal camps

A huge cache of arms and ammunition among other paraphernalia was recovered from multiple Naxal camps across Chhattisgarh.The recovery was made from Polampalli, Chintagupha, Bheji and Kistaram station limits after a joint operation was conducted by the District Reserve Guard, Special Task Force (STF) and Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA).During the joint operation, two jawans of the STF were injured in counter-firing from Naxals in Chhattisgarh's Sukma.The injured jawans were later admitted to a hospital in Raipur for treatment.On Friday, two jawans of 231 Battalion of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) were injured in an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) blast in Dantewada.

No 'terrorist motive' behind cathedral rampage: Berlin police

Berlin police said there was no sign that a "rampaging" man with a knife whom they shot and wounded today at the city's main cathedral had had a "terrorist motive". "Based on what we know so far, we have no information that the suspect in any way had a terrorist or Islamist motive," a police spokesman said. The spokesman later added that the man, whose threatening behaviour led police to shoot him in the leg, was a 53-year-old Austrian who had been wielding a knife and was "verbally aggressive".

UK marks one-year anniversary of London Bridge terror attack

The UK today marked the first anniversary of the terrorist attack in London Bridge and Borough Market with a nationwide minute's silence and special memorial service at Southwark Cathedral here. Shillong unrest: 5 protesters detained

Police on Sunday detained five people in connection with the recent unrest in Shillong that ensued after clashes broke out between two communities.The police used tear gas shells to disperse protesters.At present, curfew remains imposed and internet services have been suspended in parts of the city.According to media reports, an argument broke out between two communities over parking in Them Iew Mawlong area on Thursday.As the issue escalated, a shop and a house were set on fire on Friday. Also, five vehicles were damaged and at least 10 people, including a senior police officer, were injured.Due to the intensity of the situation, the army conducted flag marches on Friday night and authorities suspended internet services in the city on Saturday to prevent hate messages from being circulated.

Two Pak personnel injured by attack by militants

Two Pakistani security personnel engaged in fencing border were today injured after the militants from across the Afghan border attacked them, authorities said. Thousands march for Belgium terror shooting victims

Nearly 3,000 people marched in the Belgian city of Liege on Sunday to honour the three victims of a shooting there last week that prosecutors are treating as a terrorist attack. 16 Taliban militants killed in Afghanistan
