UK, US, France, Germany 'abhor' nerve agent attack on Russian ex-spy

Britain, France, Germany and the US today "abhorred" a nerve agent attack on former Russian spy and his daughter, saying it is an assault on the UK's sovereignty and threatens the security of all nations. In a rare joint statement, the four countries condemned the "first offensive use of a nerve agent in Europe since the Second World War" and called on Russia to address all questions related to the attack on former Russian double agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter in the English city of Salisbury on March 4. "We, the leaders of France, Germany, the United States and the United Kingdom, abhor the attack that took place against Sergei and Yulia Skripal," they said. The UK government has linked the attack to Soviet-designed nerve agents known as Novichok. The International Crisis Group said in a report yesterday that China has deployed soldiers and built a "counter-terrorism center" in Tajikistan near the three-way border of Tajikistan, China and Afghanistan. China has repeatedly warned about ethnic Uighur militants who have left their homeland in western China to join extremist groups such as the Turkistan Islamic Party, a predominantly Uighur group that has bases in Syria and Afghanistan and is allied with al-Qaida and the Taliban. The Chinese defense ministry did not immediately respond to a fax seeking comment.

Nine S.African cops in court over Marikana killings

Nine police officers appeared in a South African court today over the deaths of three miners in the days before the 2012 Marikana massacre, when 34 striking workers were shot dead. They are the first officers to be in court over the traumatic events of nearly six years ago, when police broke up a wildcat strike that had turned violent at the Marikana platinum mine northwest of Johannesburg. The officers, who were granted bail by the court in Rustenburg, face charges of murder, attempted murder and subverting the course of justice. The charges arise from killings on August 13 2012, three days before police opened fire on a group of workers shooting the 34 miners. In documents read out in court Thursday, the prosecution said police fired tear gas and stun grenades into a crowd of striking miners that was trying to prevent other workers from reporting for duty. "Pandemonium ensued, resulting in the violent confrontation between the police and miners," prosecutors said. Three miners and ..

Egypt's president ready to join fight against militants

With less than two weeks before elections, Egypt's president said today he was prepared to personally join the army and police battling Islamic militants in Sinai, vowing he and his security forces would prosecute the fight until the end. "I swear by God that I am ready to don combat fatigues and fight side by side" with the security forces, said Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi, a general-turned-president. "We either live together, or die together." The outcome of the March 26-28 election is a foregone conclusion, with el-Sissi running virtually unopposed. His only challenger is a little-known politician who supports him. With a landslide win beyond doubt, he and his supporters are urging voters to come out and cast their ballots since a high turnout will accord the vote legitimacy. El-Sissi also said he would rather win a third of the vote if the turnout is good than every vote with a low turnout. A good turnout, he said in comments made Wednesday, would contribute to the reinforcement of ...

UK says to invest 48m in chemical weapons defence after spy poisoning

Britain will invest 48 million in a new chemical weapons defence centre and vaccinate thousands of British soldiers against anthrax, the defence minister said today after the nerve agent poisoning of a former Russian spy in Britain. "We are investing 48 million (54 million euros, $67 million) in a new Chemical Weapons Defence Centre to maintain our cutting edge in chemical analysis and defence," Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson said in a speech. Williamson said the centre would be based at the existing Porton Down facility, a secretive British army base which analysed the nerve gas used to poison former double agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia in the city of Salisbury on March 4. Britain has accused Russia of being "culpable" for the attack. The Defence Science and Technology Laboratory -- its official name -- employs 3,000 scientists across a sprawling rural site, and has an annual budget of 500 million. It was founded in 1916 to counter German gas attacks in World War I,
