Cold wave conditions grip parts of T'gana;fresh warning issued

Normal life was thrown out of gear in parts of Telangana as cold wave conditions prevailed at various places in the state, officials said Monday. Severe cold wave conditions prevailed at isolated places in Medak and Warangal districts while a few places in the districts of Adilabad, Hyderabad and Peddapalle experinced cold wave conditions, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said in its Daily Weather Report of Telangana. The Lowest Minimum Temperature of five degree Celsius was recorded at Adilabad, the report said. In its observations recorded at 0830 hours Monday, it said Medak, Hanmakonda, Ramagundam and Hyderabad recorded minimum temperatures (past 24 hours) of 6, 9, 9, 9 degrees C respectively. These minimum temperatures are an appreciable departure from the normal levels. At minus 17.2 degrees Celsius, Kargil records coldest night of season

The minimum temperature at most places in Kashmir Valley and the Ladakh region plummeted, with Kargil experiencing the coldest night of the season so far, an official at the MeT Department said Monday. The nearby Kargil recorded a low of minus 17.2 degrees Celsius on Sunday night, he said. Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, recorded a low of minus 6.6 degrees Celsius a drop of over four degrees from minus 2.4 degrees Celsius on Saturday night. The official said Qazigund, the gateway town to the valley, in south Kashmir recorded a low of minus 4.7 degrees Celsius, while the nearby Kokernag town registered a low of minus 2.3 degrees Celsius. Kupwara in north Kashmir recorded a low of minus 5.3 degrees Celsius on Sunday night, he said. Collector wants blankets not bouquets on new year

: Adilabad district collector Divya Devarajan Monday appealed to people who come to her to extend new year greetings to bring blankets instead of bouquets, so that they could be distributed to the needy suffering from the cold wave conditions. She said the administration was doing its bestby setting up night shelters in the district headquarters and providing blankets to students of welfare hostels for relieffrom the cold wave. "Many people come to greet me on new year day (January 1). This time, it's so cold that instead of bouquets, I want people to bring a shawl, a rug or a sweater which I can give to the homeless and those in hostels. This is my request," she told reporters here. According to state government agencies, a minimum temperature of 2.7 degrees celsius was recorded in Arli village in the district and five degree celsius in Adilabad.

NE monsoon: 24 per cent deficit rainfall in TN, Pondy

With the north-east monsoon almost drawing to a close, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, its major beneficiaries, received a 24 per cent deficit rainfall during the three month-long season from October, the weather office has said. Both territories received only 34 cm rainfall during the season, Director of Area Cyclone Warning Centre S Balachandran said Monday. The only district that received 11 per cent surplus rain is Tirunelveli, he said. Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Chennai and Karur received rainfall 50 per cent less than normal. Fifteen districts received between one to 19 per cent deficit rainfall, he said. Last year, there was a rainfall deficit of nine per cent for Tamil Nadu. It was 62 per cent in 2016, the official said. Cold wave conditions continue in Pb, Hry; Adampur coldest at 1.1 deg C

Adampur in Punjab recorded a low of 1.1 degrees Celsius as cold wave conditions continued unabated in the state and neighbouring Haryana on Monday, Met officials said. Among other places in Punjab, piercing chill persisted in Amritsar, which recorded 1.3 degrees Celsius, down two notches against normal, Meteorological Department (MeT) officials said here. Gurdaspur recorded a low of 2.4 degrees Celsius and Ludhiana, too, experienced a cold night at 2.8 degrees Celsius, down two notches against normal, they said. Patiala's minimum temperature settled at 4.8 degrees Celsius, down one notch against normal while Halwara recorded a minimum of 2 degrees Celsius, the officials said. The minimum temperature in Pathankot was 4.3 degrees Celsius while it was 3 degrees Celsius in Faridkot, they said. Cold wave subside in Himachal

Cold wave conditions slightly subsided and minimum temperature increased Monday in Himachal Pradesh, the Meteorological Department said. Snowfall is predicted in high and middle hill regions in the state, including Shimla, Mandi, Kullu, Chamba, Solan, Sirmaur and tribal Kinnaur, Lahaul and Spiti districts on January 1 and 2, Director of Shimla Met department Manmohan Singh said. Keylong was the coldest in the state at minus 5 degrees Celsius between 5.30 pm Sunday and 8.30 am Monday, he added. The minimum temperature in Kalpa of Kinnaur district was minus 1.4 degrees Celsius, minus 0.6 degrees Celsius in Manali of Kullu district, 5.6 degrees Celsius in Shimla, 6.1 degrees Celsius in Dalhousie, 3.7 degrees Celsius in Kufri and 6.2 degrees Celsius in Chail, he said.

Cold wave condition hits life in Rajasthan, Mount Abu shivers at - 0.5 deg C

Cold wave conditions affected normal life in parts of Rajasthan, with Bhilwara, in the plains, recording a minimum temperature of 2 degrees Celsius. Mount Abu, the sole hill station of the desert state, registered a night temperature of minus 0.5 degree Celsius on Sunday night, the meteorological department said on Monday. Sikar, Pilani, Churu, Chittorgarh, Alwar, Dabok, Sriganganagar and Jaipur recorded minimum temperatures of 2.5 degrees Celsius, 3.5 degrees Celsius, 3.7 degrees Celsius, 3.9 degrees Celsius, 4.4 degrees Celsius, 5.2 degrees Celsius, 5.4 degrees Celsius and 5.6 degrees Celsius respectively. The night temperatures in Kota, Bikaner and Ajmer settled at 6 degrees Celsius, 6.2 degrees Celsius and 7.7 degrees Celsius respectively. Many areas in the state are under the gip of cold wave conditions which would persist for the next two day, the weatherman said.

Chilly morning in Delhi, minimum temp at 3.6 deg C

It was a chilly morning in the national capital with the minimum temperature settling at 3.6 degrees Celsius, three notches below normal, a meteorological department official said. The humidity level was recorded at 100 per cent. The weatherman has predicted a clear day ahead with possibility of shallow fog on Tuesday morning. "The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to settle around 22 and 4 degrees Celsius respectively," the official said. On Sunday, the minimum and maximum temperatures were recorded at 3 degrees Celsius and 20 degrees Celsius respectively.

Gaya coldest place in Bihar at 2.7 degree Celsius

Gaya was the coldest place in Bihar on Sunday at 2.7 degree Celsius, which was 6 degrees below its normal minimum temperature, Patna Meteorological Centre said. Earlier, Gaya had recorded 2.6 degrees as its lowest minimum temperature in December 2014, it said. As per the Met bulletin, Gaya would witness cold wave Monday with minimum temperature likely to hover around 3 degrees Celsius on Monday. Patna, the state capital, recorded minimum of 6.4 degree Celsius while the minimum at Purnea was 6.0 degree, Bhagalpur at 7.4 degree, the bulletin said. In its forecast, the Met department has said that dry and cold air will prevail on Monday in Patna and Purnea with fog or mist in early morning while Bhagalpur is likely to witness shallow fog and cold wave condition.

Mercury drops to 3 degrees Celsius in Delhi

Cold conditions prevailed in the national capital on Sunday with the minimum temperature settling at 3 degrees Celsius, four notches below the season's average, the MeT department said. The maximum temperature settled at 22.9 degree Celsius, two notches above the season's average, an official of the Meteorological (MeT) department said. The humidity oscillated between 34 and 100 per cent. Delhi has been reeling under a cold wave for the past few days. Saturday the minimum and maximum temperatures were recorded at 2.6 and 20 degrees Celsius respectively. The MeT has forecast clear skies along with the possibility of moderate fog on Monday morning with haze or smoke thereafter. "The cold waves will continue to prevail at isolated places over Delhi on Monday as well. The minimum and maximum temperatures are likely to be around 4 and 23 degrees Celsius respectively on Monday," the official said.

Amid severe cold, 3 dead in Uttarakhand

Three people have died allegedly due to severe cold wave conditions in Uttarakhand's Dehradun district, officials said Sunday. According to police, three bodies were found from the district's Raiwala area Saturday. Prima-facie it is suspected that they have died due to cold, police said. Officials said exact cause of the death can only be ascertained after the post-mortem examination. Hisar in Haryana reeled at 1.6 degrees Celsius as unrelenting cold wave intensifies in the state and neighbouring Punjab on Sunday. Hisar, where minimum settled five notches below normal, was the coldest place in the two states. Night temperatures rise across Kashmir, slight relief from cold conditions
