Partly cloudy skies in Shimla; Kufri, Dalhousie shivers below freezing point

There were partly cloudy skies in Himachal Pradesh capital Shimla Thursday following the season's first snowfall, with Kufri, Dalhousie shivering below the freezing point in the state, the MeT department said. The snowfall was experienced in Shimla, Kufri, Dalhousie and higher reaches of the state on Wednesday and Thursday, director Metrological Centre Shimla Manmohan Singh said. Shimla received 3.3 cm of snowfall between 5.30 pm to 8.30 am, he said, adding that the state capital got a total of 10.1 cm of snow. Tourist destinations Kufri in Shimla district and Dalhousie in Chamba district have been shivering below the freezing point, the Meteorological (MeT) department said. The weather is likely to remain dry in most parts of the state in the coming days, Singh added. Meanwhile, the minimum temperature in Kufri was recorded at minus 2.2 degrees Celsius and in Dalhousie at minus 0.7 degrees Celsius during the period, he said. Min temperatures drop below freezing point in Kashmir, Gulmarg coldest at minus 9.5 deg C

Higher reaches of Jammu and Kashmir received fresh snowfall on Thursday while the plains witnessed intermittent rains as the minimum temperature settled below the freezing point at most places in the Valley and Ladakh region. Snowfall has been recorded in the higher areas of the valley like Qazigund, Kokernag, Pahalgam and Mughal Road during the night, MeT officials said. There are reports of snowfall in other areas in the higher reaches of the valley and Jammu region as well including near the Jawahar Tunnel on Srinagar-Jammu national highway, they said. However, the plains in the valley, including Srinagar, received intermittent rains overnight which continued Thursday morning in some areas, the officials said. The snowfall and rains have led to closure of traffic on vital roads including the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway. Temperatures drop at many places in Punjab, Haryana after rains

The temperatures dropped at many places in Punjab and Haryana Thursday, a day after rains lashed the two states. Bathinda in Punjab was the coldest place in the two states recording a minimum temperature of 4.3 degrees Celsius. Rains lashed several places in the two states, including Chandigarh, Wednesday, a Meteorological (MeT) Department official said here. He said many places in Haryana and Punjab received rains during the night too. Halwara 5.3 degrees Celsius, Faridkot 6 degrees Celsius, Adampur 6.5 degrees Celsius, Amritsar 6 degrees Celsius and Ludhiana 6.2 degrees Celsius too experienced a cold night. However, the minimum temperatures in Patiala 9.6 degrees Celsius, Pathankot 11.2 degrees Celsius and Gurdaspur 8 degrees Celsius settled within the normal limits, he said. Traffic on Jammu-Srinagar NH suspended after heavy snowfall

Hundreds of vehicles were left stranded Wednesday after authorities suspended traffic on the 270-km Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, the only road linking Kashmir with rest of the country, following snowfall, a senior officer said. Over 1,800 Kashmir-bound vehicles, including trucks and light motor vehicles, were stopped at various places between Banihal and Udhampur sector after heavy snowfall rendered the road slippery, said Senior Superintendent of Police (traffic) Shakti Pathak. All the stranded vehicles have been moved to safer places along the highway and would be allowed to move towards their destination tomorrow if weather permits, Pathak told PTI. About one-and-a-half feet of snow has accumulated on both sides of Jawahar Tunnel the gateway to Kashmir Valley, an official said, adding that snowfall was still on in Jawahar Tunnel and Qazigund (south Kashmir) stretch. Sanjauli in Himachal Pradesh receives fresh snowfall; temperature dips to -1 degree

The temperature in Sanjauli area of Himachal Pradesh dipped to -1 degree Celsius as the region received fresh snowfall in the early hours of Wednesday.The heavy snowfall in the region put the traffic to standstill. Several vehicles were found struck on snow-clad roads at different locations in region.The drop in temperature to sub-zero level is expected to boost the tourism industry in Himachal Pradesh. Heavy snow, rain in Himachal's Sirmaur

The higher reaches of Himachal Pradesh's Sirmaur district continued to receive heavy snowfall on Wednesday even as heavy rains lashed the lower hills in the state, weather officials said. The heaviest snowfall was recorded at Churdhar, the highest altitude region of Sirmaur, which got over three-and-a-half feet of snow by Wednesday afternoon. The mercury dipped below zero degree Celsius in higher areas while winds coupled with snow are blowing across the district. The lower parts of the district including Paonta valley, Dharti Dhar, Sain Dhar and Mehal range of hills in Shillai area have received moderate to heavy rainfall. Cold weather in UP, Lucknow schools to open at 9 am

Very light rain occurred at isolated places in western Uttar Pradesh while the weather in the eastern part of the state remained dry, with the district administration instructing schools here to open at 9 am from Thursday in view of cold conditions. Shallow to moderate fog occurred at isolated places over the state, the meteorological department said. On Tuesday, day temperatures were below normal in Jhansi and Agra divisions. The night temperatures were above normal in Agra, Moradabad, Kanpur, Jhansi and Meerut divisions, the weatherman said. Cold grips Kashmir, Gulmarg records minus 8.0 deg Celsius

Night temperatures dipped Wednesday across the Kashmir Valley with Gulmarg recording minus 8.0 degrees Celsius, Met officials said. Srinagar, recorded a low of 0.2 degrees Celsius, dropping 1.4 degrees compared to previous night, they said. The temperature in Qazigund fell to 0.6 degrees Celsius, while nearby Kokernag town recorded a low of minus 0.4 degrees Celsius, they said. Kupwara in north of the state saw the mercury settling at minus 2.8 degrees Celsius, officials said. Pahalgam health resort, which serves as one of the base camps for the annual Amarnath yatra in south Kashmir, registered a low of minus 5.0 degrees Celsius, a drop of three degrees compared to previous night, they said. Rain in Chandigarh and parts of Punjab, Haryana brings down temperatures

Rain in parts of Punjab and Haryana Wednesday brought down temperatures by a few notches. Among the areas that witnessed rains are Ambala, Karnal, Panchkula, Bhiwani, Patiala, Rupnagar, Halwara, Mohali and Faridkot. Chandigarh was also lashed by rains. While maximum temperatures dropped after the rain, the overnight temperatures hovered well above normal limits. Chandigarh recorded a low of 12.1 degree Celsius, five degrees more than the normal. In Punjab, Amritsar recorded a minimum temperature of 10.6 degree Celsius, up six notches above normal. Ludhiana and Patiala recorded respective lows of 10.9 degree Celsius and 11.6 degree Celsius, both four notches above normal, a MeT Department official said here. Snowfall, rain add to chill in Uttarakhand

Snowfall in the higher reaches of the hills and light showers in lower areas coupled with cold winds added to chill across Uttarakhand Wednesday with the maximum temperature dropping at most places. Places located at a height of 2500 metres and above including Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri and Yamunotri received around one feet of snow while lower areas received light showers, MeT office Director Vikram Singh said. Chakrata in Dehradun district and Dhanaulti near Mussoorie also received snow, he said. Cold winds swept the state after the early morning snow and rain making it chillier, he said. Min temp at 8.8 C in Delhi

It was a cold day in Delhi with the maximum temperature being recorded at 22.3 degrees Celsius, a notch below normal. The minimum temperature settled at 8.8 degrees Celsius, normal for this time of the year. The humidity levels oscillated between 98 and 64 per cent, a Met official said. The meteorological department has predicted a cloudy morning on Wednesday, with possibility of haze and smog thereafter. "The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to settle around 23 and 9 degrees Celsius respectively, the official added. On Monday, the maximum and minimum temperatures had settled at 24.8 and 8.2 degrees Celsius respectively.

Minimum temperatures hover above normal in Pb, Hry

Minimum temperatures in several parts of Punjab and Haryana hovered above normal limits on Tuesday. In Punjab, Amritsar recorded a low of 8.4 degrees Celsius, while Ludhiana and Patiala recorded minimum temperatures at 8.8 degrees Celsius and 9.6 degrees Celsius, respectively, a MeT Department official said here. Pathankot (9.6 degrees Celsius), Adampur (7.6 degrees Celsius), Bathinda (8.8 degrees Celsius), Halwara (9 degrees Celsius) and Gurdaspur (7.2 degrees Celsius) registered above normal minimum temperatures. In Haryana, Ambala registered a low of 10 degrees Celsius. Hisar (10.7 degrees Celsius), Karnal (8 degrees Celsius), Narnaul (8.7 degrees Celsius), Rohtak (10.2 degrees Celsius), Bhiwani (12.2 degrees Celsius) and Sirsa (11.5 degrees Celsius) also recorded above normal minimum temperatures. Chandigarh, the common capital of the two states, recorded a low of 9.6 degrees Celsius.

Dalhousie, Kufri see freezing temperatures as HP gets fresh snowfall

Popular tourist destinations Dalhousie, in Chamba district, and Kufri, in Shimla district, witnessed freezing temperatures Tuesday as the higher reaches of the state saw fresh snowfall, the Meteorological department said. The minimum temperatures in Dalhousie and Kufri were recorded at minus 0.2 degrees Celsius and zero degree Celsius, respectively, from Monday 5.30 pm to Tuesday 8.30 am, Met centre (Shimla) Director Manmohan Singh said. The Met has forecast snow and rain for Tuesday and Wednesday. Tribal Lahaul and Spiti, Kinnaur and high reaches of Chamba, Kangra and Kullu districts received fresh snowfall, Singh said, adding that Kalpa, in Kinnaur, got 9 cm of snow and Keylong, in Lahaul and Spiti district, received 2 cm. The lowest temperature in the state was recorded in Keylong at minus 5.1 degrees Celsius, he said.
