Sultry day in Delhi

It was a sultry day in the national capital today, with the minimum temperature settling at 26.5 degrees Celsius, normal for this time of the year, while some parts of the city also received rainfall. The maximum temperature was recorded at 32.7 degrees Celsius, a notch below the season's average. Humidity oscillated between 95 and 70 per cent. The Safdarjung observatory recorded 1.8 mm rainfall overnight, but no rainfall till 5.30 pm. The rainfall received by the Palam observatory was 0.4mm, 1.8 mm and 4.8 mm till 5.30 pm. The skies will remain generally cloudy tomorrow with moderate rain/thundershowers likely to occur, said a Meteorological (MeT) department official. The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to settle around 32 and 26 degrees Celsius respectively.

Max temperatures hover slightly above normal in Pb, Hry

Maximum temperatures today hovered slightly above the normal levels in most parts of Punjab and Haryana. Union Territory Chandigarh, the joint capital of both the states, registered its maximum at 36 degrees Celsius, as per a MeT department report. Among other places in Haryana, Ambala, Hisar, Karnal recorded their respective maximums at 34.2, 36 and 33.2 degrees Celsius. In Punjab, Amritsar's maximum settled at 35.5 degrees Celsius while Ludhiana and Patiala recorded maximum temperatures of 33.4 and 35.3 degrees Celsius respectively.

Heavy rains lash Rajasthan's Alwar

Heavy rains were recorded in Kotkasim and Tijara towns of the Alwar district in Rajasthan in last 24 hours, the Met department said, adding moderate rainfall was likely at a few places in eastern parts of the state. Kotkasim and Tijara recorded 14 cm rainfall each followed by 5 cm each in Pahadi and Tapukada. Various other places recorded rainfall ranging from 1 cm to 4 cm during last 24 hours, the Met department said. It has forecast light to moderate rainfall at a few places in eastern parts of the state in next 24 hours.

Heavy rains ease water woes in Mumbai

Spells of heavy rains in the city and its suburbs in the last few days have led to a marked increase in the level of water in seven main lakes. The rise in the level of the seven main lakes supplying water to Mumbai means they have enough stock to avoid any possible cut in water supply to local residents in the next one year, said civic officials today. "Heavy rains in the catchment areas of the seven lakes that supply drinking water to the city have filled them considerably. "All the seven lakes together have 94.89 per cent stock of the total water supply required," a statement issued by the hydraulic engineering department of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said. Notably, the stock in all the seven reservoirs crossed the 13.73 lakh million litre mark on August 26 as against 14.47 lakh million litre required by October 1 to avoid any water cut in Mumbai for the next one year. Humid day in Delhi, rains likely tomorrow

The national capital saw a humid day with the maximum temperature settling at 34.9 degrees Celsius today, according to the MeT department. The minimum temperature was 27 degrees Celsius, one notch above the season's average, an official with the MeT department said. The humidity oscillated between 80 and 61 per cent while the "rainfall was nil", the official said. "Tomorrow will be generally cloudy sky with rain or thundershowers," he said. The maximum and minimum temperatures would hover around 34 degrees and 27 degrees Celsius respectively, the official said. Yesterday, the maximum and minimum temperatures were recorded at 32.6 and 27 degrees Celsius respectively.

Delhiites witnessed a moderately humid weather in the national capital today with the maximum temperature settling at 32.6 degrees Celsius, a notch below the normal. The relative humidity in the evening was recorded at 69 per cent. "The maximum and minimum temperature settled at 32.6 and 27 degrees Celsius respectively," a MeT Department official said. Heavy rain forecast for Odisha in next 48 hours

Heavy rain is likely to lash several parts of Odisha over the next two days owing to the formation of a low pressure area in the region, the Met office here said today. Under the influence of a cyclonic circulation, a low pressure area has formed over coastal areas of West Bengal, north Odisha and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal, the Meteorological Centre here said. The system is likely to become more marked during the next 24 hours, it said. Under its impact, moderate rain and thundershower are likely to occur at most places, while heavy to very heavy rainfall is forecast at some places in Dhenkanal, Angul, Deogarh, Sambalpur, Bolangir, Jhaesuguda, Baragarh and Keonjhar districts, it said. Some areas in Puri, Ganjam, Khurda, Cuttack, Balasore, Mayurbhanj, Kalahandi, Boudh, Sonepur and Sundergarh districts are likely to get heavy rainfall as well, it said. Schools closed after record rainfall in Dharamshala

Authorities ordered closure of all educational institutions today in Himachal Pradesh's Kangra district after heavy rains. Dharamshala in the district recorded the highest rainfall for a 24-hour period for the month of August in the last 60 years, the Meteorological department here said today The department said 292.4 millimetres rainfall was recorded in Dharamshala in 24 hours ending 8.30 am today. The earlier record for a 24-hours period for August was 316.4 mm of rainfall on August 6, 1958, Met centre director Manmohan Singh said. The Kangra district administration closed all educational institutions in the district today as a precautionary measure, officials said. Elsewhere in the state, 127 mm rain was recorded in Jogindernagar in Mandi followed by 98 mm in Pamalmpur and 96 mm in Baijnath (both in Kangra), 81.2 mm in Kheri of Chamba district and 64.8 mm in Nagrota Surian in Kangra district since yesterday.

Heavy rains lash parts of Delhi, humidity level at 90 pc

Heavy rains lashed parts of the national capital today, causing the humidity level to shoot up to 90 per cent. The maximum temperature was recorded at 32 degrees Celsius and minimum temperature settled at 27 degrees Celsius. The humidity level at 8.30 am was recorded at 90 per cent, a Met official said. Areas under Ridge, Ayanagar and Lodhi Road observatory recorded 48, 12.2 and 0.9 mm rains respectively during the same period. Palam observatory recorded 3.2 mm rainfall. Yesterday, the maximum and minimum temperatures were recorded at 38.8 and 28.6 degrees Celsius respectively.

RBI to conduct exam for applicants who failed to appear due to Kerala floods

The Reserve Bank will conduct examination for grade B officer posts on September 2 at various centres in Kerala for those who could not appear for it due to flood situation. The examination was held on August 16. Kerala has been ravaged by floods and landslides amid heavy rains, especially last week. "The RBI Services Board will conduct the Phase I / Paper-1 of examination for recruitment of Grade B officers on September 2, 2018, at various centres in Kerala for the benefit of aspirants who could not appear for it on August 16, 2018," it said. Those who have already appeared for the exam will however not be allowed to take it again, RBI said. RBI will issue fresh admit cards for the candidates who are to appear for September 2 exam. Fresh low pressure trough likely to bring more rain in Odisha

Respite from downpour is likely to be short-lived in Odisha with the MeT department today predicting the formation of another low pressure area on the Bay of Bengal on Sunday. Though rainfall subsided yesterday, the fresh bout of low pressure is expected to trigger showers in several parts of the state this weekend, an official at the Meteorological Centre here said. Heavy rain is predicted in the coastal areas from the night of August 25, while parts of Puri, Balasore, Jagatsinghpur, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Sundargarh and Jharsuguda are likely to experience showers the day after, he said.
