Heavy rains affect life in Odisha; downpour likely to continue

Life remained crippled in many parts of Odisha today due to incessant rainfall triggered by a low pressure which, the MeT department said, may turn into a depression and bring more downpour by tomorrow. Heavy rains since yesterday also badly affected train services as well as road traffic in several areas of the state due to waterlogging, officials said. At least five trains were cancelled, eight others partially cancelled, five trains rescheduled and originating station of five others altered, East Coast Railway (ECoR) sources said, adding that waterlogging was also reported in the Puri railway station. Vehicular movement was hit in several places as road links were snapped due to gushing water, while educational institutions remained closed in Cuttack and Khurda, officials said. Rain continues in most parts of Himachal

Light to very heavy rain continued to lash most parts of Himachal Pradesh, the weather office said today. Light to moderate rainfall occurred at most places, whereas heavy to very heavy rain was recorded at isolated places in Kangra district, it added. According to data released by the meteorological centre this morning, the highest rainfall of 116.2 mm was recorded in Dharamshala, followed by Kangra (79.9 mm), Palampur (55 mm), Nahan (53.2 mm), Gohar (50 mm), Joginder Nagar (49 mm), Sarahan (42 mm), Mandi (41.2 mm), Sarkaghat (38 mm), Kothi (36 mm), Shimla (27.1 mm), Una (20.8 mm), Kalpa (20.4 mm) and Solan (20 mm).

Rain lashes several parts of Punjab, Haryana

Rain lashed different parts of Punjab and Haryana today, providing relief from humid weather conditions. Maximum temperatures also fell several notches below normal in many parts of both the states. Chandigarh recorded a high of 25.4 degrees Celsius, seven notches below normal. The city received rainfall of 16.6 mm, the Met department said. In Haryana, Ambala witnessed 5 mm of rainfall with maximum settling at 26.2 degrees Celsius, five notches below normal. Bhiwani, Hisar and Karnal recorded maximum temperature at 32.2, 30.2 and 26 degrees Celsius respectively, up to seven notches below normal. Hisar and Karnal received 0.3 and 23 mm of rainfall. Narnaul's maximum was 32.7 degrees Celsius, two notches below normal. In Punjab, Amritsar's maximum was 31.9 degrees Celsius while Ludhiana and Patiala recorded their respective high at 28.6 and 26.8 degrees Celsius, up to seven notches below normal. Pleasant weather in Delhi after light rains

Light rains were witnessed in several parts of the national capital which turned the weather pleasant, with the maximum temperature settling at 30.1 degrees Celsius, four notches below the normal. The minimum temperature was recorded at 26.6 degrees Celsius, normal for this time of the year, a Meteorological (MeT) Department official said. The city received 2.7 mm rainfall till 8.30 am after which it recorded 1.1 mm rains till 5.30 PM. The humidity levels oscillated between 98 and 78 per cent. The Met office has forecast overcast skies along with the possibility of intermittent rains for tomorrow. "The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to hover at 30 and 26 degrees Celsius respectively," the weatherman said. Yesterday, the minimum and maximum temperatures were recorded at 28.5 and 33.2 degrees Celsius respectively.

Heavy to very heavy rain in Gangetic West Bengal: Met dept

The Met department today forecast heavy to very heavy rain in Gangetic West Bengal till tomorrow owing to a low pressure area over northwest Bay of Bengal. While the rainfall is likely to be very heavy in the districts of West and East Midnapore, Purulia and Jhargram, it may be heavy in the other districts of south Bengal, including Kolkata, the Met forecast said. Moderate to heavy rainfall in Himachal; Kufri coldest in state

Moderate to heavy rainfall lashed parts of Himachal Pradesh during the past 24 hours, the meteorological office in Shimla said today, forecasting more heavy rainfall in central parts of the state on Tuesday and Wednesday. The Met office said Kufri, a hill station 20 km from Shimla, was recorded the coldest place in the state. The minimum temperature there was recorded at 13.9 degrees Celsius. The name Kufri is derived from the word kufr meaning "lake" in local language. The minimum temperature in Manali was recorded at 14C, Kalpa 14.2C, Shimla 15.7C. Heavy rainfall lashed Kangra, Mandi, Hamirpur and Sirmaur districts. The highest rainfall was was recorded in Bhoranj (145 mm) followed by Mehra (92 mm), Gohar (76 mm), Dharamshala (71 mm), the Met office said, adding that these places are among the catchment areas for Beas, Sutlej and Yamuna rivers. 2 tropical storms form off Mexico's southwestern Coast

Two tropical storms formed in the Pacific Ocean off southwestern Mexico, but neither posed any immediate threat to land as they took tracks predicted to move parallel to the coast. The US National Hurricane Center said Tropical Storm John was expected to strengthen rapidly and become a hurricane by today night or tomorrow. Tropical Storm Ileana was trailing John to the southeast but wasn't forecast to reach hurricane force. John was centered about 310 miles (500 kilometers) south-southwest of the Mexican port of Manzanillo late yesterday and had maximum sustained winds of 40 mph (65 kph). It was moving northwest at 8 mph (13 kph). It was forecast to stay to the west of the Baja California Peninsula during the week. Category 3 Hurricane Hector drives west across the Pacific

Hurricane Hector was carrying 205 kmph winds westward across the Pacific Ocean early today. The US National Hurricane Centre in Miami said the hurricane poses no short-term threat to land. It said that Hector's projected path would carry it south of the Hawaii by midweek, but noted that track projections are uncertain at a long time range and added, "This remains a good time for everyone in the Hawaiian Islands to ensure they have their hurricane plan in place." The Category 3 hurricane was centred about 2,190 kilometres east of South Point, Hawaii, early today and was moving west at 19 kmph. It was projected to gradually weaken while still remaining a hurricane over the next several days.

Met forecasts heavy rains till Tuesday

Intense rain over Kolkata and adjoining districts this afternoon caused waterlogging of roads and low-lying areas in the city and suburbs, as the Met department forecast heavy downpour for south Bengal districts till Tuesday morning. Important thoroughfares like Central Avenue, College Street and office hub Dalhousie in the heart of the city got waterlogged in over an hour's rain. There was, however, not much traffic snarl as today being a holiday, there were fewer vehicles on roads. In the metropolis, Ballygunge in the south recorded 57 mm rainfall from noon to 3 pm while College Street in the north recorded 46 mm rainfall during the same period. The weatherman has predicted more rain in South Bengal districts till Tuesday morning. Heavy rain forecast in Himachal for Tuesday, Wednesday

Rains lashed several parts of Himachal Pradesh during the past 24 hours, the Met department has said, as it forecast heavy precipitation in central regions of the state for August 7 and 8. Heavy to very heavy rainfall were recorded at isolated places in Chamba, Kangra and Hamirpur districts. A highest rainfall of 124.1 mm was recorded in Kangra followed by Sinhunta (123 mm), Nehri (121 mm), Jawali (109 mm), Dharamshala (95.4 mm) and Sundernagar (51.1 mm) during the last 24 hours, the department said. The lowest temperature in the state was recorded in Kufri and Keylong (13.4 degrees Celsius) followed by 15.2 in Manali, 15.8 in Shimla, 16 in Kalpa and 16.1 in Chail during the last 24 hours. The maximum temperature recorded during the period was at Una (34.8 degree Celsius), followed by 32.3 in Bhuntar, 30.8 in Seobagh, 30.6 in Kangra and 30 in Paonta Sahib.

IMD forecast heavy rainfall in Odisha in next two days

Forecasting formation of a low pressure area over West Bengal and neighbourhood during the next 48 hours, the IMD today predicted heavy rainfall in the next two days in Odisha. According to the latest bulletin issued by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), there will be rain and thundershower in most places in the districts of north coastal Odisha and in many places in the districts of the rest of the state. The IMD forecast heavy rainfall in the districts of Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Dhenkanal, Puri, Ganjam and Khordha on Auhust 5. Similarly, the met office forecast heavy rainfall in Sundergarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Keonjhar, Angul, Mayurbhanj, Kalahandi and Kandhamal on August 6.
