Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC) on Wednesday urged the government to remove the 11 per cent import duty on cotton as rising input costs are impacting the textiles industry.
AEPC Chairman A Sakthivel met Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, and Textiles Minister Giriraj Singh, along with a delegation from the apparel industry and submitted representations seeking the duty cut.
They have sought "reduction of import duty on cotton from the existing 11 per cent to 0 per cent", the council said in a statement.
During the discussions, the delegation highlighted challenges being faced by the apparel and textile industry due to high cotton prices and rising input costs, it said.
The industry representatives emphasised that India has recently entered into several free trade agreements, creating significant opportunities for growth in textile and apparel exports.

The Assam Cabinet on Wednesday approved the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the state, but the tribal population will be kept outside its purview, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said.
The UCC Bill will be laid before the new legislative assembly on May 26, the chief minister said at a press conference here after chairing the first cabinet meeting of his second term as the head of the government.
"This is a major decision taken in the first cabinet meeting and aligns with the commitment we made during the elections," he said.
Sarma said Uttarakhand, Goa and Gujarat have already implemented the UCC, but his government has customised it for the requirements of Assam.
''We have completely exempted the tribal population from the purview of UCC. All rituals, traditions and customs practised by the people of Assam outside the scope of UCC,'' he said.

Retirement fund body EPFO will soon automate the process for settling final provident fund withdrawal claims, fast-tracking the money transfer to the applicant's bank accounts, a top official said on Wednesday.
The Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has more than seven crore members.
At present, partial or advance withdrawal claims of up to Rs 5 lakh are settled through auto mode, and the deadline for the auto-settlement mode is three days from filing the claim.
Speaking at the ASSOCHAM's National Seminar on New Labour Codes, Central Provident Fund Commissioner, EPFO, Ramesh Krishnamurthi, said, "We are also going to initiate, as far as feasible, auto-settlement for now...which was (available) only for advances. Now we are going in for auto-settlement of final withdrawals."
He further added that the EPFO is going in for auto-settlement and auto-transfer of provident fund accounts in case a member shifts employers.
