	International Human Rights Day commemorates the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) by the United Nations General Assembly on December 10, 1948. &#39;Human rights&#39; refer to basic rights or freedoms that include people&#39;s right to live, health, education, freedom of speech and thoughts, and equal rights.&nbsp;</p>

	This day is observed to promote equality, peace, justice, freedom and the protection of human dignity. Every individual is entitled to rights irrespective of race, colour, religion, sex, language, or social status.</p>

	The atrocities of the Second World War made the importance of human rights an &#39;international priority&#39;.</p>

	The Universal Declaration of Human Rights is the most translated document in the world and available in more than 500 languages. Every year, the United Nations chooses a different theme for Human Rights Day to make this day of celebration more impactful and encouraging. UDHR was drafted as &lsquo;a common standard of achievement for all people and nations&#39;, and states that all human beings are entitled to civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights.</p>

	Human Rights Day is celebrated across the globe by formally organising exhibitions, political conferences, meetings, cultural events and many other programs to advocate for human rights&#39; awareness.</p>
<p>
	The Human Rights Council comprises 47 elected United Nations Member States, which are empowered to prevent inequity, abuses and discrimination, protect the most vulnerable, and punish the perpetrators of human rights&#39; violations. Human rights are protected and upheld by the international and national laws, and treaties globally.</p>

	<strong>Rights included in the UDHR</strong></h4>
<p>
	The 30 rights and freedoms mentioned in the UDHR include the right to be free from torture, the right to freedom of expression, the right to education and the right to seek asylum. It also includes civil and political rights, such as the rights to life, liberty and privacy. UDHR also mentions economic, social and cultural rights, such as the rights to social security, health and affordable housing.&nbsp;</p>

The combined market valuation of eight of the 10 most valued firms plunged by Rs 2,28,690.56 crore in a holiday-shortened last week, with HDFC Bank and Reliance Industries taking the biggest hit, amid an overall weak trend in equities.
Last week, the BSE benchmark fell 1,829.48 points or 2.69 per cent, and the Nifty declined 518.1 points or 2.56 per cent.
Equity markets were closed on Tuesday on account of Ganesh Chaturthi.
From the top-10 pack, Reliance Industries, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Infosys, ITC, State Bank of India, Bharti Airtel and Bajaj Finance were the laggards while Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and Hindustan Unilever were the gainers.
The market valuation of HDFC Bank plummeted by Rs 99,835.27 crore to Rs 11,59,154.60 crore. Shares of the company fell by nearly 8 per cent last week.
The valuation of Reliance Industries plunged Rs 71,715.6 crore to Rs 15,92,661.42 crore. The company's shares declined over 4 per cent past week.

The Reserve Bank is likely to maintain status quo on policy rates for the fourth time in a row at its bi-monthly monetary policy review meeting early next month, as retail inflation continues to remain high and the US Federal Reserve has decided to keep a hawkish stance for some more time, according to experts.
The Reserve Bank had raised the benchmark repo rate to 6.5 per cent on February 8, 2023 and since then it has retained the rates at the same level in view of the stubbornly high retail inflation and certain global factors including elevated crude oil prices in the international market.
The Reserve Bank Governor-headed six-member Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting is scheduled for October 4-6, 2023. The last meeting of the MPC, the highest rating-setting panel, was in August.
"We do expect the RBI to hold on to a status quo position this time as inflation is still high and liquidity tight. In fact, going by RBI forecast on inflation, it would be above 5 per cent in Q3 too

Firefighters were battling flames in Brazil's northeastern Bahia state, fanned by strong winds and abnormally high temperatures for the season, authorities said.
While it is still technically winter in Brazil, with spring due to start in a couple of days, a heat wave prompting record temperatures has swept across much of the country since the beginning of the week.
Faced with a growing number of hot spots caused by high temperatures, Bahia's association of forestry-based companies this week launched a campaign to prevent  and combat  wildfires.
State authorities said they have mobilised over 150 military firefighters to put out fires in different areas across the state, as well as in Chapada Diamantina, a national park known for its panoramic views.

Russia has announced a ban on exports of gasoline and diesel fuel, aiming to stabilise rising domestic prices and improve the country's fuel supply.
The government decree issued on Thursday said the restrictions would be temporary but did not give a date for them ending.
The move was expected to lead to increased fuel prices in the world market.
Russia's exports of diesel fuel are estimated at about 9,00,000 barrels a day and the country has exported 60,000-1,00,000 barrels of gasoline daily, state news agency Tass reported.
Tass said domestic fuel prices dropped by about 4 per cent after the ban was announced.
The ban will not apply to other countries in the Moscow-led Eurasian Economic Union trading bloc  Armenia, Belarus, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan.

The allegation of India's involvement in the killing of a Sikh Canadian is based on human and surveillance intelligence, including signals intelligence of Indian diplomats in Canada, an official familiar with the matter told The Associated Press.
The official said Thursday that the communications involved Indian officials and Indian diplomats in Canada and that some of the intelligence was provided by a member of the "Five Eyes" intelligence-sharing alliance  US, Britain, Australia, New Zealand and Canada.
The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to discuss the matter publicly, did not say which ally provided the intelligence or give any specific details of what was contained in the intelligence.
The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation first reported details of the intelligence.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday lauded athletes who won medals in various events at the ongoing Asian Games in Hangzhou.
