Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday said the Dharavi Redevelopment Project was not merely a housing scheme but an economic transformation initiative, and asserted that the first phase of about 10,000 houses would be completed in the next 18 months. Speaking in the legislative assembly, Fadnavis said that under the redevelopment project, eligible residents will be rehabilitated at the site, while others will be provided homes at nearby locations. He also said the state has identified 19 cluster redevelopment projects across Mumbai as part of its strategy for planned urban renewal and housing. Dharavi Redevelopment Project is an ambitious urban renewal initiative to transform Asia's largest slum in central Mumbai into a modern, transit-oriented hub. It aims to rehabilitate the residents while preserving the area's vital informal economy and local industries. The project commenced in January 2025. Eligibility for upper-floor residents under the Dharavi Redevelopment Project (DRP) is contingent in part on the status of ground-floor occupants, with affidavits accepted only if the lower unit qualifies, officials said. A government resolution dated October 4, 2024, extends benefits to upper-floor residents who can prove occupancy before a November 15, 2022, cut-off, offering 300 sq ft homes outside Dharavi but within the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Beneficiaries can opt for a hire-purchase model, paying nominal rent for 25 years before ownership transfers, or choose early ownership by paying a pre-approved sum. Officials said the policy marks a departure from past slum rehabilitation schemes, which typically excluded upper-floor occupants. Eligibility is determined through a hierarchy of documents, including electricity bills, registered rent or purchase agreements, and government-issued IDs showing the upper-floor address prior to the cut-off date. The Supreme Court on Thursday adjourned to first week of December the hearing on a plea by UAE-based Seclink Technologies Corporation challenging the Maharashtra government's decision to award Mumbai's Dharavi redevelopment project to Adani Properties Pvt Ltd. A bench comprising Chief Justice of India BR Gavai and Justices K Vinod Chandran and Vipul Pancholi noted the CJI will not be able to complete hearing in the matter as he is due to retire on November 23 . Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Friday said the Delhi government is considering studying Mumbai's Dharavi model for slum redevelopment in the national capital. Gupta also claimed that some people were spreading misinformation regarding the demolition of slum clusters in Delhi. "If you construct a house near a railway line, the chief minister will not save you. I urge people to think about safety and security. If a railway accident happens or someone dies on the railway track, who will be responsible?" she said. Gupta asserted that demolishing houses was not her government's aim. "But it should not happen that we keep on giving homes and people do not vacate slums," she added. The chief minister said her government is likely to study Mumbai's Dharavi model for the redevelopment of 675 slum clusters in the national capital. The redevelopment of Dharavi, a vast slum sprawl in the heart of Mumbai, will be carried out through a special purpose vehicle set up through a joint venture betwe
