Saddled with a tiny market share of sub-2%, Japanese auto major Nissan has unveiled its first cross-car redi-GO under the Datsun brand. The 800cc redi-GO joins a bunch of crossovers from companies like Toyota, Volkswagen and Fiat. Nissan along with Datsun is eyeing a 5% share in the fast growing Indian car market by 2020.

The company has not revealed the price of the car, bookings for which will start in May and deliveries will commence from June. While being a cross, the car is likely to priced to compete with the entry level hatchbacks like Maruti’s Alto, Hyundai’s Eon and Renault’s Kwid.  These cars sell in a price range of Rs 2.5 lakh to Rs 4.42 lakh (ex showroom, Delhi).

Built on a new platform, the redi-GO is the company's the third vehicle under the  Datsun brand in India.  The company had launched a compact multi-purpose vehicle Go+ in 2015 to add to the Go small car under the Datsun brand of vehicles.

Guillaume Sicard, President  Nissan India Operations, said, Datsun's growth strategy in India will continue to reflect its commitment to local engineering, development and manufacturing. “The Datsun redi-GO, as a tangible expression of this commitment, offers several best-in-class capabilities. It is created to bring fun, free and content thinking to the otherwise traditional compact hatchback segment”.

The Datsun redi-GO is India’s first Urban-Cross, a car that takes the best features of a crossover and mixes them with the major attributes of an urban hatchback. It combines the roominess, best in class ground clearance (185mm) and sheer fun of a crossover and blends that with zippy driving and fuel efficiency of a compact hatchback, the company said.
