As the Tata group battle spills over from the Bombay House boardroom to courts and now to stock market regulators, the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) could be the next space to watch in the battle.

Both Ratan Tata, who took over as interim chairman of the group, and Cyrus Mistry, ousted on Monday, are expected to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi this week. They would, of course, meet separately.

PMO officials did not give the dates of the meetings.

In fact, soon after Mistry’s ouster on Monday, Tata got in touch with the PMO and even sent Modi a letter, briefing him on the development. “A new management structure is being put in place and a selection committee has been constituted to identify the next chairman of Tata Sons,” he wrote.

Tata and Modi are believed to share a cordial relationship. It was under then Gujarat chief minister Modi that Tata shifted the Nano plant from Singur in West Bengal to Sanand. The Sanand plant of the Nano project was inaugurated by Modi in 2010. Tata has often expressed his indebtedness to Modi for giving land in Gujarat for the project.

Also, last year, when many business leaders were critical about the execution of Modi government’s reform measures, Tata cautioned industry against getting disillusioned. He even asked industry captains to support the PM in delivering his promises.

Even Mistry, as Tata chairman, is learnt to have met the PM on several occasions. At the launch of Modi’s signature scheme, Make in India, in September 2014, Mistry was chosen as the first speaker among the top industrialists gathered at the capital’s Vigyan Bhavan.

But the PM’s meetings, likely to be scheduled this week, with the two warring business leaders from the house of Tatas may be a bit different.
