Sandip Das has stepped down as the managing director of Reliance Jio Infocomm, the Mukesh Ambani-controlled Reliance Industries’ telecommunications arm that is going to roll out fourth-generation (4G) services in India this year.
Das would become mentor to the Jio division of Reliance Retail, which will develop the long-term evolution (LTE) system for Reliance Jio’s growth in the telecom space, Ambani said in an email to the Reliance Retail team.
“Das with his vast knowledge of marketing and sales, particularly in telecom, is uniquely placed to mentor this exciting and valuable strategic initiative,” Ambani said, adding devices are a cornerstone in bringing broadband to the masses and the LTE ecosystem for devices in India is nascent.

“It will take deep conviction and substantial expertise to create such an LTE device ecosystem. Reliance Retail is pioneering this LTE device ecosystem by building sales and distribution channels, including retail stores,” he said. Das said cited personal reasons for stepping down as Reliance Jio’s MD.
Before Jio, Das worked for six years with Maxis Group, which owns a stake in Aircel. There, he was chief executive officer until April 2013 and oversaw Aircel-Maxis’ India operations.
