After President Pranab Mukherjee's son Abhijit Mukherjee made it to the Lok Sabha by winning the Jangipur by-poll, another kin of the President is now likely to join electoral politics.

The Birbhum district unit of the West Bengal Congress is all set to propose the name of Chitralekha Mukherjee, wife of Abhijit Mukherjee and daughter-in-law of the President, as its candidate for the upcoming by-poll in Nalhati assembly seat of the district.

The Nalhati assembly seat is being vacated, after sitting MLA Abhijit Mukherjee's elevation to LokSabha as Member of Parliament post his victory from Jangipur constituency.

“She (Chitralekha Mukherjee) was very active while campaigning for her husband during 2011 assembly election. She is most suitable candidate for Nalhati. The final decision will be taken by party high command.” Birbhum district Congress President Syed Siraj Jimmi said.

According to West Bengal Pradesh Congress leaders, the party is yet to finalise its candidate for the by-election in Nalhati assembly seat. Neither Abhijit Mukherjee nor Chitralekha Mukherjee could be contacted.

However, Congress candidate is likely to face a tough competition in Nalhati as, unlike in the Jangipur by-poll, Trinamool Congress is likely to field its candidate in the by-poll in Nalhati assembly seat.

Although, Abhijit Mukherjee had a comfortable win in 2011 with support from TMC, in a more recent political battle without an alliance, TMC swept the municipality election in Nalhati bagging eight out of the 15 wards, while Congress managed to win only in three.
