After a thumping victory in the assembly election the Narendra Modi-led BJP swept the municipal election by capturing 49 municipalities out of the 76 in Gujarat. The main opposition party Congress yet again failed to perform as it could only gain victory in seven municipalities.

On February 10 election for a total of 1921 seats across 76 municipalities in the state were held and its results were declared on Tuesday by the State Election Commission. An average 75 percent turnout was registered during the voting held for the 76 municipalities on Sunday. As per the results announced by State Election Commission (SEC) on Tuesday, the BJP won 1153 seats, while the Congress had managed victory in 447 seats. Independent candidates have won 290 seats while NCP has got 13 seats, followed by Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) with 13 seats and Samajwadi Party (SP) with two seats. The fall of the Congress has been drastic as its seat has come down to 447 from 608 during the previous elections. After the results were announced Modi said that the people of Gujarat have yet again reposed their faith in the dynamic and development oriented policies. "Thankful to people of Gujarat for the continued faith in us. Congratulations to BJP karyakartas (workers) for major win in municipality polls," the Gujarat chief minister tweeted on the micro-blogging site.
