The Lok Pal road map for UPA government

Post- Assembly polls, a chastened UPA government, now seems keen to adopt a more pragmatic approach in getting the contentious Lok Pal bill passed. Faced with intractable allies, as well as the Opposition, who want the Lokayukta provision to be deleted, the government seems agreeable to dropping the section and instead invoking a separate legislation for it. A senior Congress leader said that the government was proposing to invoke Article 252 of the Constitution whereby two or more states could request the Parliament to legislate for it; and thereby the Parliament could frame a separate Lokayukta law for states that were keen to have it.
