A 3D Geographic Information Systems (GIS) that can provide a wholesome view of a building before the construction begins is not a novel concept in engineering. But if this technology can be used for infrastructure and disaster management, it can resolve many of the complexities involved with urban planning.
The project, developed by a team of four students from IMS Engineering College, Ghaziabad, took home the first prize worth Rs 1.25 lakh in the Cloud 20/20 Version 6.0, an online technical project contest by global information technology company Unisys.
Integrating GIS technology with GeoRDBMS, a database management system, can store and manage a large volume of spatial data and can prove to be more effective. For instance, in case of a terrorist attack, the impact of a bomb explosion in the building on the surrounding area could be determined before-hand and precautionary measures and safety routes could be ascertained.

The contest saw 1,413 entries from 894 colleges across India. The final 100 teams, working in teams of four, were given a mentor from Unisys India. The six finalist teams will be given job opportunities at the company.
“It is inspiring to see these young minds come up with solutions that we as a community face,” said Kumar Prabhas, MD, Unisys India.
The all-girls team from Pondicherry Engineering College won the second prize of Rs 50,000 for V-Share, an application that helps downloading in group and thereby reduces the data consumption per head.
