Despite CAG's recommendation, the Railways have not yet filled up about 89,000 vacant posts in safety category.

"The number of vacant posts in safety category as on April 1 is 89,024," the Rajya Sabha was informed today.

The number of accidents excluding the cases at unmanned level crossings has decreased from 129 in 2007-08 to 100 in 2009-10.

"However, the number of vacancies does not have a direct relation to the number of accidents," Minister of State for Railway E Ahamed said in a written reply.

CAG in its recommendation has stated that the Indian Railways should fill up all safety category posts.

Ahamed said arising of vacancies and filling them up is a continuous process. The policy of the Railways administration is to fill up vacancies promptly as per laid down procedure.

"New recruitment policy has been framed and notification for filling up of many of the safety and operational posts have already been issued."
