The majestic Chetwood building of the Indian Military Academy (IMA) has remained a mute spectator to the passing out parades (POPs) since its inception in 1932.
But yesterday’s POP was yet another big milestone for the IMA when it achieved the rare distinction of producing more than 50,000 army officers in its 78th year of its inception.
“The Indian Army has stood the test of time since the1930s to the present day. The glorious 78 years of rich tradition, heritage and the training regime at the IMA has achieved another milestone today for having trained more than 50,000 officers of the Indian Army from its hallowed portals,” said the Army Chief General V K Singh, who was the reviewing officer.
Mesmerising light and sound shows showcasing the academy’s history, band displays and a host of other events marked the two-day celebrations. The academy which became functional on October 1, 1932 with a course strength of 40 cadets, has till date trained 50,475 officers. And during this period, the IMA has had also the proud privilege of training some of the army icons like Field Marshal Sam H F J Manekshaw and Capt Vikram Batra to name a few.
But IMA has so far remained a male bastion only. Who knows whether women will also get a place in the near future? “Yes. In the future, you may see some changes as far as women in combat roles are concerned,” said General Singh.
But IMA Commandant Lt General R S Sujlana was more optimistic when he said the academy is ready to provide training to women. “We will build necessary infrastructure in case women join the IMA,” said Lt General Sujlana.
