The Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) Alliance, a lose network of activists and representatives of civil society organisations, has given 'Dodo Awards' to Canada and UK.
The awards are given to those governments whose actions contribute to biodiversity loss. They were chosen by consensus within the CBD Alliance members.
According to the Alliance, the award was given to Canada for breaching the "moratorium on Ocean Fertilization and Geo-engineering, and its stance on biofuels. UK was given the award for blocking attempts in the European Union and the CBD to adopt a precautionary approach to synthetic biology and its development of biodiversity assets.
The Alliance stated that the runners up to the award included China, Brazil and Paraguay.
