With hundreds of units dealing in hazardous chemicals exposed to high risk, the Gujarat wing of Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) has asked the state government to set up an institute to identify risks involved in chemical industry.

"There is a need for research in risk managment in chemical industry," newly appointed chairman of FICCI-Gujarat, Pankaj Patel said while addressing two-day training programme on "Training on Integration of Environment Planning with Chemical Chemical Disaster Risk Reduction and Preparedness" here today.

Referring to the recent serial bomb blasts which claimed over 50 lives in Ahmedabad, Patel said the blast could take place at any chemical units. "This could happen at your unit by a fire. Therefore there is a greater need for risk management," he added.

Considering the risk, the Gujarat government should look into setting up an educational institute, which can identify risks associated with chemical industry and find ways to reduce it by consulting national and internation experts, he said.
