Haryana urges Centre to expedite storage dam projects

BS Reporter New Delhi/ Chandigarh

The Haryana government today asked the central government the Ganga Flood Control Board should take up expeditiously the projects of storage dams on river Yamuna and its tributaries at Renuka, Lakshar-Vayasi and Kishau, as these have been lying pending for a long time resulting in perpetual loss to the stakeholder states. The issue was raised by Haryana Irrigation Minister Ajay Singh Yadav at the 15th meeting of Ganga Flood Control Board in New Delhi today. He urged the Board and particularly the Union minister for Water Resources Salman Khursheed to take up these projects on war footing.

Yadav said during monsoon flood water was normally drained causing damage in the plains. Last year, the state had to spend Rs 664 crore on flood relief measures. Instead, this water could be stored in small water bodies along the Yamuna which could then be utilised for recharging groundwater or other purposes.. He suggested such schemes should be funded by the Board and the cost of acquisition of land should also be allowed as part of total project cost.
