Monsoon rains are now 19% below normal

The overall shortfall in rains has now dropped below 20 per cent for the first time. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the southwest monsoon from June 1 to August 1 was 19 per cent below normal, against 22 per cent a few weeks earlier.
